615 = 616? transmission
From the diesel forum:
Another manual transmission question, would a cast iron 4 speed from a 220D (615) be the same transmission from a 240D (616) I'm pretty sure they are, but I just wanted to ask. The only dumb question is the question not asked at all... Thanks

The W115.117 240D used the same basic transmission, so did the "early" W123.123 cars.

* I guess that my main question is whether your looking for identical parts, gear ratios, or whether you're just looking for another manual gearbox that will bolt into the car.
* The 115.110, 220D, with OM615 takes a GM716.002 gearbox. * The 115.117, 240D, with OM616 takes a GM716.003 gearbox. * The 123.123, 240D, with OM616 takes a GM716.005 gearbox. * I compared the first gear numbers from the 716.002 to the 716.005 and found that they were different, but the 4th gear numbers were the same. The input shaft numbers are different, but the mainshaft numbers are the same. So if you're getting into the gearboxes and plan to mix and match parts be sure to make careful physical comparisons. * I don't have the gear ratios for each gearbox handy but that would be a useful piece of information. Don't forget to consider your final drive (rear end) gear ratio. * Wonder if there's a 5-speed match-up for the W123/OM616? Seems like that would really save engine rpms and fuel on the highway.
