W109 and W108 rear axles

Is the rear axle from a 300SEL 4.5 different to a 280SEL 4.5? I know one has air and the other doesn't but that should not make a difference to the axles right?

Are you asking if the whole unit is different, or are you asking if the axles themselves are the same [ axle shafts] ??

I'm asking because I am getting hammered by 113 SL owners who email me about the axle that I have and then hover in a holding pattern because they are unsure if the axle will work.

Looks different via results in the EPC. 108 4,5's use 113, 112, 108 part # for the rear axle. While the 109 uses a 109 part #'s. Is yours LSD or open?

The last 108 4,5 rear axle I had sold to a 113 SL guy for $500.

OK ..That is what I thought.
They need the axle from a 108/4.5 for that conversion.. the 109 will not work due to mounting difference in the suspension system.
They want the 108/4.5 b/c that gets their 113 a cruising @ lower RPM with the 3:27 gearing only used on the 4.5/108.
The 113s [ most] are 3:92 and 4:08 , so they tend to scream at highway speeds. It is a great conversion, although I only recommend it on the Manaual trans 113s.

Here is a utube on that same conversion

Al, look at one of your 6.3's rear axle. There is no compensating spring and there are the brake torque arms. Then there is the sway bar.
