Mechanical injection has fuel injectors each with an individual rail going to a fuel distributor.
Electrical has a rail for each side, injectors have individual plugs.

Easy to tell the difference between the two - as for mileage, it's a non-overdrive transmission, combined mileage is anywhere from 8 to 16 MPG.

I get about 13 in my daily commute and hit 17 on the highway while on my Dallas to Seattle drive.

I regularly get at least 17, more like 18-19 from my Euro 79 280SE, even with the vacuum retard disconnected. It's only slightly worse than the BMW around town, which gets about 22 mpg. (The BMW gets 32 highway which is pretty nice.)

You must have a really light foot. Even the contemporary motoring magazines gave it around 12mpg combined.

I have a 450 SL W107 and the best advice I have gathered from everyone was where someone said pretend you have a egg on the pedal. This has saved me at least 5 MPG.

I drive my 4.5 and my 6.9 with a lead foot, its no fun otherwise. If your worried about mileage, go for a 300SD. You can drive that with a lead foot and it will feel like you have a hard boiled egg sitting between the pedal and the floor but the mileage will be good.

Well, we're about to take it on a long trip, and I'll have the GPS with me so I'll measure mileage and report back.

Diesel or gas...well there is no substitute. 4.5-6.3-6.9 wakes me right up!

Not as good as I figured.

Turns out my odometer is reading about 3% too high - after 100 GPS miles the trip meter read 103.

Using mileage from the GPS, we got 16.5 MPG on the highway. not as good as I thought. This was however with a stiff head wind, loaded up, and 80 MPH.

edit: On the way home, again with a stiff head wind, got 17 MPG.
