Looking at a 79 280TE

I know nothing about the W123 chassis and was hoping for a bit of direction. What should I look for? What should I pay attention to when test driving it?

Rust is the biggest enemy on a car of that era. The mechanicals are robust as all get out, but major repairs are expensive. Buy one that is in good shape and been taken care of and you can be very very happy, buy a turd and you will find it will be expensive to put right.

Get it checked out by a mercedes experienced mechanic before purchasing.

They're built and designed so well that they can drive very impressively and be carrying major defects.

From the pictures I can tell you that it is a euro spec car since it has fabric on the seats. From the pictures its got a really great interior. If the rest is as good as that it is a keeper.

I'll post more photos later. It had serious rust issues and the current owner had left it sitting for three years. It had a comfortable cruising speed of 25mph.

i noticed the euro interior as well... check mechanicals first, some older cars have 123 can be a little rusty, i have noticed it more on the euro spec cars... otherwise if you like it and looks good, enjoy it!

That is one sweet interior! I've always wished I could have cloth, manual, heated seats. Oh well.

Rust was an issue. I'll upload the shots he took tonight. If he passes on it, which I think he will, I'll forward the details

Not all of his photos turned out. I've included a few that illustrate the condition of the vehicle.

He said that the drivers footwell would not pass the screwdriver test. You could punch right through the metal. The car has been driven once a year to get it inspected. Its also been parked under a pine tree and the sap had sealed the windows shut. The AC did not work. The car took excessive time to reach 55 mph at which point it felt unsafe. Violent vibrations.
