need quick purchase advise
have to make quick decision or its gonna get crushed
it's a 1973 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL (Long Body) havn't seen it yet, it's outa town, but coming on sunday. what motor would it have? he says it's carbed. it's missing a rear door, windshield, some chrome, and a few other things. apparently it runs awesome and newly rebuilt trans. how compatible would it be with my 73 280c for parts interchange? I think his price is pretty fair at 500 bucks delivered to my door. it was used to restore another one, and is all the leftovers to build a perfect one i'm told. but this guy is worth millions, so I don't think it's to junky. would anyone be interested in any other parts from it? I don't think there's any rust, and I'm no expert, but isn't the long body parts harder to come by? I was mostly hoping to gain some nice spares for whenever i run into issues with my coupe. hope it's the same 2.8 twincam 6 like mine did they put anything else in in 73? |

if it has an e in the nomenclature it was originally fuel injected....that is not to say it for sure has the original motor.

If you are sure of the year, then it is a 117 /V8 Fuel Injected 109 chassis.
..but maybe they gave you the wrong year and it is a little older..with a 6.3 ..if so, BUY IT!!! As far as parts interchange, your car is a 114 chassis with completely different suspensions, sub frames , running gear, etc.. The 109 would be more compatable to the 108 kingpin/swing axle chassis cars.[ pre 114] Also , 109 cars never used carbs. The were all FI.

in theory, you can stuff a v8 under the hood of an M110 car. But it will requires wits, muscle and a somewhat fat purse. But other than a conversion like that, nothing interchanges, except maybe the radio, instrument cluster housing, tires and the steering wheel.

yah, it's an injected v-8.
was in mint shape. minus the missing parts. had to let it go though, no useful parts for my 114. I much prefer my 2-door in the looks dept. |

The Tach wasnt found on (standard) on anything other the 6.3, I have seen them as an option on a W114 280E.

Meanwhile betcha vdo produced *maybe* 1,000 of those w109 tachs, easily the rarest of snatch'n grab Vintage MB parts, probly $500 bounty on em in many circles. What really sucks is hearing about junkyards scrappin these cars for sheet metal value, ignorant of rare parts being heaved that're easily worth hundreds of dollars on the vintage/collectible circuit. Hell, they'd do well to salvage and save air suspension parts and wood dashboard furniture too. |

Yep, there was a W114 280E in Europe, It has the M110 with Bosch D-Jetronic EFI. Very nice car.

well, this one's going to a pick and pull, so some people will get a chance at it before it's crushed.
It was a great deal, but I can't really justify it to the wife or myself for that matter, I have to many projects on the go already. it ran really nice, but was missing to much to fix. |

ended up getting it anyhow, he dropped price to 300$ and i'm a sucker for saving a car from the scrapers.
it's a 4.5 v-8, has tons of reciepts in the glove box, looks like the transmission was rebuilt 850 kms ago. came with some nice rims and tires too! thing runs like a top! it's missing the drivers side rear door (guy says this is where the long body parts differ from a regular sedan?) it's missing the entire grill/crome/front clip. other than that seems complete, I know at my local junkyard there's two different four door 300's, 1's a 300d and ones a 300 sl i think? would they have a useable door? or am I better off to stick with scraping this thing? any parts that people on here might want? |

ok actually got it home now, drove it off the trailer cold, proceeded to burn the tires for 150 plus feet!!!
man this 4.5 has a lot more go than my m110. upon seeing this thing there is no way I will be repairing it for the road. it is parts for sure, looks like most of the crome and trim is in the trunk, most glass is gone, a lot of the interior is gone, it seems to have electronic injectors, would this make it a k-jet? he said the air ride worked great, but after 5 mins of running, nothing was coming up yet. would anything work in my favour to use this engine in my 114? ie would the transmission work?motor mounts line up? looks like the exaust would have to creatively routed for sure? |

It has D-Jet. Parts wise, you can do quite well by parting it out. Chrome is valuable, headlight and tail lights are valuable. Instrument cluster, injectors , map sensor and computer are all worth something to someone.
