Is this the heater valve?

In my month long journey through the dashboard of my 1970 280SEL and beyond I think I have finally figured out what the heater valve is.

I am attaching a photo of a 2-barrel thingy on the left side of the glove box that has a lever in front of each barrel, which a cable is connected to which is moved by the heater levers.

Please look at the photo and tell me

a) is this indeed the heater valve

b) both levers move with great resistance, so how do I get this thing out to fix it. I have the whole dashboard apart, I might as well tackle this too.

any help appreciated

Italian Process

'Don't know your model.
'But I suspect you are right from the Rust on the apparatus the cables are
hooked to.(Coolant leaks over a Long time)

That Electrical connection [Plug](the Pins with wires) is missing it's cover.

So how do I get it out?

The cover of the electrical box came off while I was getting everything out of the way for the photo.

I have gone through so much trouble taking everything apart, now I want it to work perfectly. I ready something about flushing the valve several times. But I would prefer taking it out and redoing everything - but how do I do that?????

That is the heater valve. You can get replacement seal rings for the valve.

Disassembly can be a pain.

That sure is what you're looking for.

CAREFULLY remove the slotted screws. They can strip easily if that rusted. Once they're out, you'll see a circlip (round spring retainer clip) holding the assembly in place. Remove that clip and the valve assembly should pull right out. Some members say the tip of an old spark plug is the same thread type as that hole is, so it makes for a great puller tool. From what I understand, you can still special order all of those rubber gaskets from the dealer.

None of this is nearly as easy as it sounds - especially the clip removal. Took me a good half hour to remove both clips I'd say.

There is a set of pilers that are reversible which easily remove circlips. Since you will have the heater core out it would be a good time to take it to a radiator shop. They can clean out the inside of the core, reseal it and pressure test it for leaks. it only cost me $25 to do mine. If you do this the core will have excellent flow, which means a nice warm car.
Don't forget to check your heater blower.
