1977 240D -parts from 1981 240D ?

Hello all - hoping someone could helpl me- I currently have a 1977 240D in excellent shape , this car is "new" to me and I plan on keeping it for a while - I have a chance to pick up a 1981 240D as a spare parts car,(although it still runs).
My question is would most of the car be interchangeable with the 1977? - such as trunk lid , specifically and other body parts / headlight housings.
As well the engine , I am assuming the parts are identical?

Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks , Wayne

The most major 123 series discrepancy i can think of is they changed transmissions around '81/82 where later model trannies will not bolt straight across without linkage swap running all the way into the console. That and different glow plug relay system. Plus look for accelerator linkage differences: yer '77 runs linkage to passenger side of engine where the '81 does not. Otherwise oughta be 100% interchangable parts.

May look the same, but....

Most interior parts are different. Interchangable, but different.

For example, the grain is different on all the trim parts, headrests are different shape, seats have different pleating, instrument panel is different style, A/C control is different, carpet........

Engines are different. Glow system, cam and head have changes made between 79-80. All interchanges if you use the right combination of parts, but different.....

Body trim, hardware and sheetmetal all interchange.

The 81 has the early manual trans, Aluminum one was 82 and up.

The later ones have a different ac compressor and mounting apparatus, also the cruise is different. I am not sure of the year it changes...1980?

A few other points. The lower body trim is different on a 1977 than on later models. The A/C control went from a knob to a dial by 1981. The A/C compressor went from a York to the Delco. The cruise on the 1981 is still the same and did not change till 1982. But like has been said, all major body components should be the same, or at least will fit. It's mainly in the details.
