W111 Engine, what would be best?

Hi
I am going to start to get to work on planning my Finny restoration. The engine is in a poor state and would need a rebuild but i dont fancy put back a low powered engine that returns 16mpg, when the price of petrol is currently £1.15 per ltr .I was considoring putting a diesel engine in but don`t fancy the noise or lack of refinement you get from a deisel engine. So i`m open to suggestions, i was toying with the idea of a modern Kompresor engine but figure the electrics would be a nightmare, then i thought of another classic engine that would be suitable for LPG conversion. I am aware that some injection systems dont get on well with LPG and can be troublesome.
I am thinking maybe a 2.8 from an 80`s merc or do you have any ideas of a suitable engine that would fit into my 220seb? Currently it is a column shift manual box but i will be happy with an auto that i can bring up through the tunnel. Does anybody here run an old merc on LPG?

Thanks Paul

Easiest upgrade to your Fintail if you can find one, would be one of the carbed M114 2.5 or M130 2.8 sixes from the 68 - 72 250/280S cars. Thet were mostly seen in the US with automatics, but stickshift versions were built. A much newer choice in a refined diesel would be one of the OM603 sixes used in the W124 300D of the mid-late 1980s, but that would be a more complicated swap, as would one of the twin-cam M110 gas sixes used in the 280 series cars from the mid '70s to early '80s.
I don't know about the UK, but by 1981, 6-cylinder Mercedes gas engines sold in the US had computerised fuel injection. There was a W123 250 sedan, with a carbed M123 single-cam 2.5 six sold in Europe and availible with stick or automatic that might make a suitable candidate for a Fintail swap.

Happy Motoring, Mark

The 80s 280e engine is a very nice strong and durable engine, but no economy engine. It will deliver fourteen or fifteen mpg (us gal) around town and in the low twenties highway with an automatic.

Its a sweet engine though and very trouble free.

To get any real economy though you need a diesel....and correct rear end gears.

Rebuild the engine, I'm taking a class in engine rebuilding, and enjoy your car. I'm also planning on replacing the carbs with EFI and FORD EDSI spark control. I'll use the carbs in the mean time, I'm looking at Megasquirt or BOSCH LH 2.2 from an early 80's Volvo.
