Now it's time to put the world's biggest jigsaw back together.

Blue 72 250 05-03-2008 10:30 AM

looking good. Was white the factory paint color?

thorsen 05-03-2008 10:42 AM

It was. I was very tempted to go silver but in the end I kept it original.

JMURiz 05-05-2008 10:21 AM

Wow, those cars look good with no-bumpers :D

Best of luck, new paint is cool!!!

Nice. Glad you kept it original.

I put in about 25 hours this weekend reassembling the girl. All body panels except the doors are mounted. I got the headliner, dash, and center console reinstalled (I am glad I re-finished the wood on the dash this winter). I started weather-stripping the side windows and need to find a glass guy that makes house calls. She moved under her own power this weekend, albeit only back and forth in my driveway, for the first time in 7 months.

What's that silver stuff you have on the floor? Did you remove the old insulation?

- Peter.

thorsen 05-12-2008 01:16 PM

I chipped out the old asphalt insulation when I was welding in new rocker panels. The silver stuff is an asphalt-based heat/sound insulation that is self adhesive and comes in rolls. I put 2 layers on the floor.

Very nice project you have going there. Is that engine the 2.5 liter or the 2.8?

- Peter.

thorsen 05-12-2008 01:37 PM

It's the 2.8. I rebuilt the heat risers in the exhaust manifold, put in a new exhaust system, replaced the Zeniths with a set of Webers, added a Petronix Ignitor and Flame Thrower coil, and called it good. Compression in all 6 was right up to specs so I didn't see a need to pull the engine.

Very nice. Does it have functioning a/c? I notice what appears to be an updated Mexico deck in the center console. Looks like it'll be a really nice vehicle when you are done. I was persuing a really nice 72 250C, white with red interior here in Phoenix a while back but there were too many problems with titles and such so I had to pass.

Looks like you have a W115 grille.....

I replaced the AC system this winter. Selctec compressor, aluminum parallel flow condenser, R-134 expansion valve, new drier, and new hoses. I also installed a higher CFM pusher fan. It should be good to go now.

The radio is a NOS Becker Grand Prix I think. The car came with an Alpine unit that I knew wasn't going to make it through the restoration. It didn't look vintage enough.

What does the 114 grill look like? I always thought this grill was funky because it seems to be missing chrome strips.

The early W115 had an aluminum insert with square holes punched in it.
The later W115 cars had the W114 grille, which was a plastic, slatted design.

Both styles had the single vertical strip and the 3 "whiskers" per side.

Both my 69 220Ds had the aluminum insert. My 73 220D had the later style.

All my W114 cars had the plastic insert.

Thanks Jim. I will have to keep my eye out for one.
