Thanks, Don. You really like my garage?

Just kidding.

I am trying to get her up and running so I can sell her.

Bellissima Ferrari

I understand you have your reasons for selling it, but what a car, that's about the pinnacle of classic car ownership for me. Only a W198 or W186 could rival that for me.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do, no-one can take away your memories of such a wonderful car.

Drool-worthy. Now I just need to come up with a wad of cash.....

And to echo the statement below, I would keep the car...no way I'd ever part with such a beauty.

Are you crazy?

Man that car is awesome!

Why get rid of it, even if its a ton of money?

Its only going to get worth more. Drive it on weekends and look like the man!

http://www.tomyang.net/cars/ferrari.html is a great blog about restoration of a 1963 Ferrari 330gt. Might get some ideas there.

Yes. Tom Yang has a good site.

The car is kindof problematic for driving. The value of it makes it kindof intimidating to drive and where can you park it? Certainly not at the grocery store.

So its also problematic to work on since there is no actual repair manual for it. So basic information such as the meaning of the marks on the flywheel which is used for valve and ignition timing is unobtainable. I asked three Ferrari experts the meaning of the marks and was told three different stories. So it makes working on a Mercedes which has standardized markings that run for generations without change.

So anyway, I bought it not running about 15 years ago for not a lot of money and its worth quite a bit now and its time to move it along.

Its quite a challange to work on and kindof fun to think about owning but its really not something I like to bring up in conversation because of the way folks think of it.

So thanks for the kind thoughts but it will move along this year, I believe.

So my simple reassembly of the upper end and the intake and exhaust systems has somehow spun out of control!

Yikes!

Now I am committed to at least a partial rebuild of the motor. After finding low compression I removed the heads again and found bad valves, loose guides and other stuff. Then we pulled a piston and rod and found that the bearings are beautiful but the wristpin bushing is worn and the rings as well in addition to the cylinders being slick. So I am pulling the motor so all that can be done.

Tonight I discovered that before the motor will come out the tranny must be pulled back. Of course since the tube frame runs under the tranny the interior must be removed....the seats, carpet and tranny hump all have to come out.

Of course since my garage is a tangled clutter of misc. spare mercedes parts and such I will have to spend a half a day moving things around so that I will have places to set the seats and the hood.

I have been digging out all my Ferrari literature to keep around to read to keep up my enthusiasm for working on the complex, uncompromising old girl!

Total Ferrari immersion....kindof like learning a language!

When I get her all back together I probably will either hate her or love her.....or both.

What crap,no Ferrari ever came with anything but rubber or steel hose.
how do I know?
275 GTB

Ferrari are OK for the posing set.I'll stick to Mercedes Benz .A far better car than any overated V12 in a crap body like your 250GTC.
If Ferrari had been capable of building something like this, then my name would have been ferrarimad..

Tom,
I hope your immunizations are up to date - it sounds like you are going to be exposed to ship-fitter's disease. You know, "as long as I am here, I might as well...."

Good luck.

Well, I don't actually know what my fuel lines and oil lines are but they are definately not steel and they are brown so they don't resemble any rubber I have ever seen. Somebody referred to them as pigskin, which they resemble...being brown. Nobody in the parts supply end of it seems to know anything about them though.

As far as the v12 being overrated it won a lot of races and championships so I think the record speaks for itself.

I like benzes too and comparing them to a Ferrari is just apples and oranges. They were built for completely different purposes. One is an excellent mass produced vehicle with excellent mass produced detailing. The other is largely hand made and hand finished. Some of the details are incredibly elegant and some are rough. Each car is true to its purpose and origin.

You have some nice benzes there. I have always liked the 6.3s. Also they may be the only benz harder to maintain than an early Ferrari.

Yeah, I swore I wouldn't do it, too.

Tom, beautiful car, but I can understand the reason(s) to sell. I would be worried to death about the garden tools falling on it, for one

Good luck with the engine. I hope you have a money tree in your yard...

By the way, can you pull out the engine plus tranny as one unit? That's how I get the engines out in MGs. Reduces (accidental) load on tranny input shaft for one, but con is that you need a bigger hoist and raise the car a bit higher to clear the ground.

I don't know about pulling them together. The motor has four mounts though so I think pulling the tranny is no big deal. In this case the engine is pretty light and the tranny heavy so I am not sure the ratio but they are closer to the same weight than most cars I think.

It takes two to pull the tranny, one inside the car and one under it.
