Unhappy 450sl

my recently aquired 77 450sl had been sitting since 2001. replaced all fuel components at the rear and got it started. rpm guage is stuck. but when it starts it runs at a very fast idle. replaced plugs . what does the thortlle plate safety switch do. the fuel pump would not run until i unplugged the conn. new to these stinking gas engines. it idles to fast and i need help.
is there any where i can get the description of how this engine is controlled? could it be that after the other six mech? worked on it they could has really screwed it up. i am a novice on the mercedes gas cars. but i know electroincs. a flow chart would be nice. since my dvd manuals wont play on my computer. will trade the dvd,s for a set of cd for my beloved diesels.

Why don't you go over to the "SL forum" and do a search on Idle?

Why do I have the feeling this is going to be a painful thread?

The fuel pump relay will not run the pump unless the starter is cranking or the engine is running. On the 450 it tells if the engine is running with a switch in the air sensor that opens when air starts to depress the sensor plate. So when you unplug the switch, you fake the relay out.

Good advice to do a Search, lots of posts on idle problems.

Haynes has a decent manual for the 450 engine.

This post has a like to a really good guide to K-Jet.

Guide to fuel injection system for newbies

But why did you buy a gas car if you don't like them?

CIS is different from anything you'll find on a US car.
Wake the car up slowly and be prepared to replace two components, the WUR and the fuel distributor. If you can find a recently dead 5.0 or 3.8 car that has the same number of ports (4) on the side of the fuel distributor, get those parts and you should be home free.
