108 Ignition Tumbler instructions?
I've crawled through all the ignition lock posts, and none of them seem to have any specific info on the W108. The ignition is stuck and didn't give up to 10-15 minutes of trying random things. That said, the key I have is pretty worn, and only barely works in the door locks.
I just ordered a new key and tumbler, and am going to try to get to position 1 (first base? ) with the new key when it comes in (should be here by Friday, they say). But my manuals aren't here yet from the Classic Center, so I don't know how to get the tumbler out if I get the key to turn. Is there a trim piece to remove first? Do I need a special tool, or is a coat hanger sufficient for the 108? Any wisdom (especially of the photographic variety) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Zandr '72 280SE |

If it's the same as on my 111 (which I am pretty sure it is), then it is pretty easy. I had mine replaced in 5 minutes. I did remove the chrome trim piece on the black plastic of the ignition surround. I recall moving key to position 1, pushing a pin or so, and pulling the tumbler out. Assembly is reverse sequence. I can look in workshop manual up and send detailed instructions later if needed.
Good luck, Bert

Does the chrome trim just pry off, or unscrew? I guess that's were I'm unclear...looking at it in 'finished' form, I don't see anything that could rotate to expose a hole for the pin.
Thanks! -Zandr |

Chrome ring should pry off. It has 3 bended tabs on the back. If you pry it off carefully, they should just "unbend". If you break it, no big deal, it's a $5 part new from MB. After ring is off, you should see pin to depress, as I recall.
