Revisiting the Great Mileage Debate
Moving to NC so I drove my (automatic) 71 220D with brand spanking new A/C lines on my crappy York compressor from NJ to NC on Friday night. Drove the 500 miles straight through at about 65 mph with the A/C running about half the time and my iPod playing nicely through the interface built into my refurbished Becker Europa radio (thought I would throw that in from the other thread today). I also realized that I was getting a steady enough current out of my cig lighter to run my Garmin navigation system.
Still...I averaged 27.5 mpg. Now, I did just replace all the fuel filters, had recently run a quart of transmission fluid through the engine and had the valves adjusted. Not bad considering what I had to pay for the diesel. |

Nice results. Our '75 240 can get close to that if it's driven right, but have never had it on that long of run. That's one great looking 220 you have BTW.

My '83 300D did 25 mpg on mixed use as of today running on B20. I was doing good until I decided to do a top end run on the way back from drill. I hit 111, but my reserve light came on soon after.

You did well...25-30 is about all these will do, and with an auto tranny to get 27.5 is very good. Keep an eye on the oil level - the older engines which didn't have oil separators tend to consume more oil than the later ones, especially if they have a bit of blowby. Good luck and enjoy your classic ride!

That's consistent with my experience with our 73 220D with an automatic.
The sticks could do a mile or two better. jim

I bought my '76 450SEL in Dallas and drove it straight home to Seattle. Averaged 17MPG at 70-80MPH with no AC. I'm now getting around 13MPG in mixed driving on my 9 mile commute. Sigh.

My '82 automatic 240D, with non-workng AC, usually gets in the low 20s, and hasn't topped 25 yet. My 4-speed '81 240D got close to 30 on my recent trip to the Outer Banks, while my Euro 5-speed 300TD has been averaging around 25 in mixed driving and I'm hoping to top 30 on the highway.
If driven gently, the 6-cylinder vintage Mercedes gassers I've had (220S, 250/8) could manage 20 to 23 on the highway, but city mileage could drop to 12 to 14 - on premium gas! Happy Motoring, Mark
