Wierd Park-Brake Handle

Can anyone tell me why the R/H Drive W123s & 126s have that astronomically ugly, big honkin' parking-brake release handle as opposed to the usual round, small knob?

I think it aint just the release but replaces emergency pedal assembly too. Basically ye pull the "big honkin ugly" handle to set the brake and twist it to release. Question of MB not wantin to crowd accelerator pedal with emergency brake pedal (for obvious reasons) and having no space on t'other side next to bell housing either.
