'72 250 - A Conversation with St. Peter

I have reached a point in the ownership of my '72 250 where I am faced with some hard decisions. In a way, my '72 is standing at the gates of heaven talking to St. Peter. Does he let her in? Or does she plead to remain in service on earth? In reality, the decision will not be made by the heavenly admission committe, rather her fate will be determined by the market (which is not kind to a W114). I am going to sell Janis....

I have been kind to the old girl and, in exchange, she has always been reliable for me. I am, however, a realist and understand that the fair market value for this model is never going to see a large increase sufficient to justify me keeping the vehicle and doing a restoration. (I feel a little sad making that comment because of the well executed restoration that our pal Melted Panda shared with us).

So I thought that I would put the sad news on this message board before I place her on Craig's list. I am hoping that someone in the Pacific Northwest may be a follower of this site and a believer in W114 and want to pick up a solid 250 (Like the famous Munich Taxi).

Here is the mechanical run down:

The car is in Spokane
Clean Colorado Title in hand
M130 ~ 100K Miles
Rebuilt Zenith INATs with new linkage bushings
Crane ignition
New Transmission mount and diff mount
Rebuilt power windows
New Power steering lines
Don't forget the box full of related parts and manuals

Since the car was from Colorado there is no rust to deal with. I will post some photos in the coming days to substantiate this claim.

I am asking $1,000. That is what I consider the fair market value for the old girl. Sad, I know. If I don't get a buyer by the 4th of July, I will part her out - first dibs go to you guys, the remaining parts go to ebay. Once I hit $750 I will send her to the shredder

Feel free to claim "dibs" on parts before her fate is sealed.

So - Thanks to all in this forum who have helped me keep the old girl on the road. I owe all of you a beer if you come my way.

Might have more nibbles in the 'cars' subsection of the 'classifieds' section. Good luck.

What's wrong with it?

I just added up the receipts for the resto of my 250C. I'll never get that back from it. It's all about having a good time (I think).

d a /\/\ /\/\ i t. . .this is just what Ive always wanted to do, buy a car sight-unseen (mind you I like the 114) and drive it home. . .two problems 1) Colorado is hella far from Orlando 2)The cost involved is prohibitive. . .

I think we'd all like to see some pics though. . .

Shucks, it's better than that! The car is in Spokane, Washington. It has a Colorado title. Heck, when you get to the Colorado state line you're only halfway there!

Another important question, is how far could/would you drive it?
Can it make the drive from Spokane to FLA?

Kinda nice way to see the country.

Got a call last night about the car. He is looking for a daily driver for his son - walked through the basics. Supposed to call back today... we will see.

Here is the Craig's List posting. http://spokane.craigslist.org/car/720840280.html I would appreciate any critiques about the content of the posting that you guys have.

I am also toying with the idea of posting it on ebay. I would appriciate any opinions on that route.

Thanks

That is a great looking 114, a well kept one too from the pics and your description. Your price is very reasonable for the condition IMO. The only thing I would ad to the CL listing is a brief reason for selling it, like your first post in the thread. Let them know your regrets at having to part with it. I hope you find a buyer, it would be on the edge on criminal to send her to the yard. She's not ready for St Pete yet. Best of luck.

That car at that price should sell quickly I think. It's nicer than mine is going to be when I put it up for sale in a few weeks, and I plan on asking more money.
