I can take a pic if you'd like, but the timing marks are nothing more than little notches that are made when a tech in Germany used a punch to bang them on. They are located on the top of the first tower, the camshaft marking corresponds with the top of the woodruff key, theres also a punch mark there as well.

Look at the top of the camshaft and you will see the reference point notch, rotate the camhaft untill you see the other one if it is not visible.

PM me if you really need a pic, ill go take one for you. . .

here ya go. . .

The cam sprockets are off the camshafts in these pictures as the car is undergoing an engine overhaul and I have parts all over the place. Nevertheless,

In this picture, you can see that the two punch marks within the red circle are in line with one another, this should be the case when the motor is at TDC.

In this picture I rotated the camshaft slightly as to show which pieces rotate. I indicated the timing marks within the red circles.

Let me know if you need anything else.

I just finished installing a new tensioner and checked timing marks at same time. Here are pictures:

First set TDC (as close as I could), thenn checked corresponding cam timing marks. This is on a 1972 SL with M117 4.5L engine.
