Did The W116 Body Style Ever Have Manual Sunroofs?

I don't think I have ever seen a W116 body style car with a manual sunroof; only electric. The service manual CD and the online parts catalogs do not seem to show it as being an option.

Today I was at Pull-A-Part and they had a 1982 300TD wagon. I removed the manual sunroof regulator and it fits perfectly on my 1979 300SD sunroof! So now I will have a manual sunroof and not have to bother with a motor going out and having to help the roof with one hand while pressing the switch with the other.

It's too bad the manual window regulators and heater controls from other body styles don't fit the W116. I hope to get rid of my power windows and automatic climate control in favor of manual.

Since the W116 was the S class for the 70s, it probably didn't have a manual sunroof option. In fact, I've never seen a Euro W116 w/manual sunroof options either, although that's not to say they don't exist. If the complete manual mechanism fits your sunroof panel, and if the closing arms extend far enough out to where you can lock the sunroof in open position, then it should work.

From the W123, you will also need the side rails that hold the felt seals in place (the manual stops are rivited to them), the rear sliding feet (fronts are the same - manual & electric), and the rear height adjusters. These are spot-welded to the sunroof frame. I made the change years ago on my W123 and it was was well worth it. But the best change was ridding my car of the ever-so-problematic climate control. The Euro W116 does come w/manual HVAC.

The 116 chassis had the option of a manual sunroof:

the manual sunroof could be specified on all models, european market, from 1973-1980.

in the US, a 280S or 280SE could have one.

All Euromarket cars had the option readily available from the factory.

I have the side rails with the special stops for the manual sunroof. The electric sunroof metal panel from my 1979 300SD and the manual sunroof metal panel from the 1982 300TD are identical in every way except for the color. So now I have everything I need for the conversion and I am very happy. Only cost me about $10. Maybe I can sell the power sunroof parts and recoup some of my investment.

Congratulations; it looks like you are good to go. Don't forget the rear height adjusters. Happy manual motoring!

I have to go back and get the height adjusters. I'm not sure how they come off, but if they are in fact spot welded to the body, then I'll bring a punch, chisel, saw, and metal shears. Hopefully I can get them off. I'll probably have to drill a couple holes and bolt them to the body.
