1974 Mercedes 230

Hi

I just bought a 1974 230 and have couple of questions:

First, the car doesn't go more than 100 km/h and if it's uphill will slow down to 70km/h.
No strange noise, doesn't sound like is missing power, just doesn't go.
Second I think it sits a little bit on the side, specially the back, leaned on the left side. What can I do to fix it, if I need to change, shocks, springs can I buy lower ones?
Where can I buy the gear indicator with the cable, I broke it and now don't know what gear I'm in, it's automatic.
and finally can someone tell me what is the green switch next to the lighter, you pull but nothing happens. The car is in canada.

Thank you

Could need springs or spring mounts.
That green pull-out knob is the rear-window defroster.
Shift indicator cable would be salvage-yard, or possibly still availible from Mercedes.

Happy Motoring, Mark

Hi Mark,

Thank you for your reply.
Do you know of any lowering springs and shocks and what do you recommend?
Thank you.

Four or six cylinder? Is the tranny kicking down properly?

four 2.3L
engine starts and runs fine but what I've noticed something new now is when you shut the car and go out you smell gas, like it's running rich or something.
The automatic changes properly with no problems, it's hard to explain, it's like something is stopping the engine from performing properly. like it has power but something, somewhere gets lost or not released.

Do you also know what is that button to the right of the ciggarete tray, white light when you pull it goes on but not sure what it does?
the other green one is little higher to the right from cigarette lighter, I guess that is the defroster.

Thank you.

One pull out knob is for the defroster and one is for the 4 way flashers.

As for the power issue, does it seem like it may be starving for fuel? On a diesel MB there is a tank strainer that if plugged will not allow full fuel flow. i am not sure if the gassers have the same thing.

Strainer is at the bottom of the tank it looks like a giant inside out bolt. You remove it to drain the tanks

You'll need a 22mm hex bit to remove it or make one out of a big bolt and a couple of nuts.
