I finally got the car back together and running, I had to replace the loom that contained the following wires:

1)Positive to starter
2)Starter to wiring block on right fender
3)Wiring block to alternator (thick wire)
4)Wiring block to alternator (blue wire)
5)Wringing harness that plugs to oil pressure sending unit, oil level unit and switch to starter.

I used heat shrink wrap to wrap the wires as best as I can and will continue to look for a good harness that i can use at a later date.

I got everything back together but the temp , oil pressure and fuel gauges still don't read correctly. As I had a spare cluster, I took it apart, painted the deals and replaced those gauges.

It's still not functioning correctly. The oil pressure does not rise past 2 bars, the blinker lights do not work and when i flip on the full beam lights, the oil pressure and rev counters drop.

Any idea what I can try next? Worse case, I'll put back the original cluster.

I thought so too, so I ran a ground wire to the body from the cluster. It did not really help.

On the left rear of the engine,is the earth strap connected?. The W126 wiring is very simple ,although there is a lot of it .

what you describe sounds like the main feed under the fuse cluster is burnt. Undo the two screws in the front of the fuses and lift the fuse body up. Underneath you will see a big bunch of red wires screwed to a copper bolt. Undo this and inspect it and clean it. Put it back together and see what happens.
Also the red wires are fed through the rear of the ignition switch and eventually this burns out. Check for damage there too.

Thanks Ron, i'm going to try to switch clusters for kicks and giggles and see it it works. If not. then i'm going under the fuse box. Oh and my neutral safety switch packed up on my in park. I have to move to the shifter to the right to get it to go. What's that about?

I feel your pain Al. I began work on the recent acquisition 280S 116 "Sadie" whom I call privately The Sadist, when nobody is around to hear it. The rear brakes actually bled in a very polite fashion. Not so on the front end. I will have to photograph the state of danger the pass. Front rubber brake hose is in. It is not good. Both front bleeders are seized, and one wheel bearing goes growlwlwlwlwlwlwlwlidontlikebeingabearingwlwlw
This car is just too nice to be as bad as it is. It's the only evil servo I have ever seen that doesn't leak! She does have some damned dodgy bigs of **** welding done in the rear end that have aged as well as Gordon Brown. I will have to take pictures. Guess why there was no accelerator pedal...

You're wrong. There is a hole in the floor where the pedal should be. Yes.

My first rescue dog was called Sadie. I also called her Sadist after she had a few accidents on my floor

I ran down to the shop and picked up the old cluster that I had. It was grotty and the dials were a light yellow so I took it apart and cleaned the cluster housing with windex and a rag.

I'm not sure what the stuff is on the inside of the cluster, it looks like dust but is very tough to remove. Maybe mold?

I then painted the dials with some enamel paint that I picked up at the hardware store. I have enough paint to do about 3 million dials so if any of you local members need to do this. Come and pay me a visit.

New issue now is the neutral safety switch is no longer starting the car in park unless I move the shifter all the way to the right.

Episode 1.

I bought a W123 station wagon a month or two back which had been abandoned at a BMW workshop. I paid out the delinquent bill and claimed the car using the local unclaimed goods legislation . Why? it has a souped up om617 thats why..
plus the basic car is pretty good with everything working ,except the air con fan.
Any way, today I decided I would start cleaning all the rat $hitt out of it.. It has been sitting in the other place for a couple of years and rats had been making a meal of the old maccas and other disgusting takeout food remnants .
It took two of us most of the morning to clean out all the paper bags etc etc in the car, then I decided I would hang the carpets and attack them with a pressure washer..brilliant! they have come up like new and in the process i think I got 20 Kgs of sand out of them.
The basic hot up stuff is going on my 300D sedan (4 speed manual) and it consists of a STT turbo kit..
After washing all the rat droppings out it (the rats had bad kidneys I think, they crapped everywhere!!), I put a battery in it. i glowed it a couple of times and gave it a kick. it fired and ran perfectly!. Even with ancient diesel in the tank it runs smooth and has tons of power (for a OM 617 ).
Watch this space..

Episode 2

After fooling with the Diesel all morning i thought it was about time i dug my 6.3 out of the shed where it has sat or 2 years. The blue one, the W108 belongs to a customer and is in for a service. )
I have been slowly cleaning up things on it and had planeed on entering the M100 groups down under rally. The rally was cancelled at the last minute due to lack of cashed up entrants. ( thanks GFC)
i have had the injection pump rebuilt and the manifolds wet blasted to make them look nice.
i had to rebuild the starter using a replacement solenoid for a john Deere tractor ( $20 as opposed to $240 from the classic center) .A new battery ,some fuel and she fired right up instantly.
It feels so good to have unlimited torque and the lazy exhaust note .
Fuel here is insanely expensive so i only put $100 in but couldn't resist the temptation to hit the freeway and open her up. One eye open for the police and the other on the road ahead I gave it a quick burst to 130 mph no problem .

Nice 6.3 Ron, you should drive it more often. a buddy of mine who's also on the forum (Gear_head) stopped by and helped me replace the timing chain on my Euro 560SEC. The chain and the guides were in pretty good shape and only about 6 degrees out. It appears to be the original chain and guides because there was no master link.

We did it over two days and the only snag that we hit was bending a rail pin when getting it out. Luckily, I met a guy who had a pile of parts engines sitting around so we managed to pull one which put us back on track.

I also bought a 1991 black/black 560SEL which needs an engine. I'm not sure why and I instantly regretted it but there you go.

So, why, Al, should you be the only guy with regrets? Heck, about half of my 'impulse" MBs have been about a day too soon. (before I slep't on it)

For instance: 1969 150SE w/ 180 motor & 4-speed for 1500 at a farm auction where I wiggled a finger and had to stand there alone when it was done. Had to rebuild the head, --still have a very wiggly shifter and a bad brake booster. ( But she goes like stink.)

Bon apatite
