280 head id

Hi, with the purchase of a non running SL, I got some parts that don't fit the car. One part is a rebuilt, head marked: 280 S/A. Does anyone know what this head belongs on? It looks new, with valves installed and ready to go, but I don't have a car for it. It has only the spark plug holes, but no holes for injectors. Thanks in advance, Ron

Measure the thickness of the head. A lot of machine shops will cut/plane too much of the surface rendering the head as pretty but junk. I might be interested in it if we figure out what is for. Where are you located?

280 head

Hi Mike, Where do I make the measurement, from where valve cover gasket goes to where head gasket goes? I'm near San Luis Obispo, Ca. Ron

Hello Ron,

The 280S/A head is a cylinder head for an M130 carbureted engine. These were used on the w108 chassis 280S carbureted sedans (later versions 1969-1971). It will not work on your SL. Notice that the front chain gallery area is wider on your block. What series SL is yours? (280SL, 250SL, 230SL).

The valves, springs, adjusters, cam supports and other misc. in the 280SA head are the same as in your SL.

Thanks Joe.

Sorry Ron, I have no need of a M130 head.

Thanks Joe and Mike. I have a head for the 230SL, the PO had already assembled the engine. He had purchased the 280 S/A head by mistake and had had it rebuilt before he realized it would not work on the 230SL! Regardless, he was fed up and threw the thing into my truck as I packed up the car on my trailer. He also gave me a set of 6 wrong injectors, EP/DES 5/45 which he had been told would work on the 230SL. They won't, but I believed him at the time of my purchase of his car. So I now had to buy a set of new injectors. That's what I get for letting my emotions rule over logic when I saw this beautiful car. My luck will probably be no one wants any of this stuff that won't fit the SL. Ron
