1966 230S Trans linkage woes
So I finally pulled the ole finnie out of the garage for the first time!!!! She was purring like a kitten. It felt great. When I was pulling out I heard a *ting* and thought a wrench fell on the ground. When I went to put it in park she was still moving forward. I shut her down, threw some chocks under the front tires and saw that the *ting* was actually the trans linkage..... Grrrreeeeaaatttt........... So now I need to know where I can find the bushing that goes into the linkage and I also noticed that where the bar hooks up to the trans there isn't a pin for the bar to hook onto??? I looked on Phil's site but with no luck. I'm gonna call the dealer tomorrow to see what they have. I can't wait to actually take it on a real maiden voyage. The cruise around the block in second gear was fun though

Well I called the dealer and they said it would be best if I came down to make sure we order the right parts. I think I have it figured out but I could always use some help from all you expert Vintage Benz owners.
The Startek EPC has been down (or atleast it won't work for me) for a few days now so I can't get the part numbers I need. I know I can just wait a day and drive the half hour to okemos, but I'm trying to save a trip. I got a few good photos of the selector and the selector arm. It looks like they both just may need a bushing....?

Hello,
The bushing number is 112 268 0150. I like to soak it in sculding hot water for a few minutes before installation. It goes on quite easy and becomes very pliable. Be sure to install the bushing so that the small hole is positioned to go over the ball on the tramssion levers first, thus locking it in place, otherwise it will not stay on.

That photo of the dirty transmission shows the bushing still attached to the pin.
Also Phil sells that bushing. Should cost more to ship it. BTW, isn't there a bushing on the other end of that rod too? A rather largish one. |

I just went through this!
I got the WRONG bushings (I think) from a local "euro" parts supplier and they were as USELESS as sunscreen on a polar bear. The one on my parts car was slightly different, but I took what the PO had 'engineered' and ran with it! he sandwiched what was left of the bushing in the eye of the shift rod arm between washers with a bolt through the centre, and drilled the 'nub' out of the shift arm and put the bolt through...it will NEVER fall off! mine had a SECOND shift arm bolted to the FIRST shift arm at the trans pointing DOWN (looked totally factory)....when I tried to use the UPWARDS pointing arm (as in YOUR pic) it REVERSED the gear shift order compared to the indicator in the dash. However, this did NOT affect the NSS aparati, causing the vehicle to be startable in its lowest gear, rather than the Park that was indicated! oh.....and the firewall end has a bushed eye on the 66 'good' car, and a really cool rodend with a wire retaining clip on the 64 'parts' car. I used the rodend! Last edited by V8Finny; 10-20-2008 at 07:50 AM. |

The 112 268 0150 is the bushing for the gear selector on the trans. You can not buy the bushing seperate for the top. Have to get the whole threaded end. I will post the part number when I get it, $12.00 from the dealer with no shipping. I always try to support Phil whenever I can. This instance it doesn't make sense to pay more for shipping than the parts. I'm sure Phil understands.
Thanks again guys.

I don't have an 800 number, (you might "Google" their site for one), but the direct number to Tom Hanson, the parts manager, is 949-598-4842, They are in Irving, CA.
Have the vin and he will get the exact bushings. The shipping will probably cost as much as the parts, so you might think about other needs. I would also add that the sponsor of this site might have them, but I have been using Tom for 15 years Ed

Hello,
This arrangement is the same as other MB models of the era. Here is a thread on the SL Pagoda group site which is relevant. http://www.sl113.org/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3717
