Ignition Timing 71 280se-M130

I have a 6cyl 280se with AC. I have installed an xr700 ignition upgrade.
Part of the procedure calls for checking the timing prior to the phase check. The degree designations are on the front and rear of the balancer. The info I have says to use the rear numbers ( based on the fact that there is an angular indicator) which is what I used to set-up the Crane system. Initially, the engine fired right up but with slight rough running. I want to make sure that I get the timing right before I adjust the phase. I sure would appreciate a step-by-step regarding the timing from here.
