Where to get the special socket to adjust valve clearance?

Hi all,

I'm looking for that special socket that enables to adjust the valve clearance on M116 engines without taking the rocker arms out. It's a kind of bent 17 mm socket. I went to the local MB dealer and they told me they cannot get it. I then called the MB Classic Center and I was told the tool is not available anymore. Any idea of where I could get sucha tool?

Thanks in advance

17mm tool

These are just no longer available. You will have to start searching Ebay or just keep posting here until somone one finds one in a pawn shop or a garage sale.

The tool made by Hazet is the one designed for this, but I always found that you needed to grind a bit off the face of them to make them fit. The wrench part is just a little too thick to fit in there just right.

You can also use a 17mm crow's foot wrench and a rachet. The main reason you need the special tool is that you are supposed to adjust the valves using a tourqe wrench. If the valve adjuster turns too easily it will need to be replaced so it will hold its' adjustment.

I just adjusted my valves on my 130 engine. I was able to use a 17mm crowfoot wrench with a extension bar and a 15 inch slide bar. It worked very well. The crowfoot wrench should only cost about $5 and the slide bars go for about $15.

Thanks for this. In my case using a norml spanner is a bit difficult, as on the M116 V8 you end up with the chassis rails on the way. I had to take the rocker arms out one by one by pushing the valves down. Quite a long job.

There's one for sale on e-bay, now that the job is done.
