Engine Tubes

Hey guys,
My W108 isnt starting properly. there is a yellow cable/tube coming from a round cylinder infront of the steering wheel. The tube connects to another tube which connects to the engine. The connection has been broken, and thats the only thing which has changed since the car hasnt been starting well. What is the tube? should i fix it or should i get a new join? Also, where is the central locking reserve located? one of the only things i havent fixed with the car, but it needs doing.
cheers,
luke

Sounds like a vacuum tube

Hi Luke

Sounds like part of the vacuum circuit which operates the door locks and various other bits and bobs on a W108. This will cause the engine to run a bit weird as it's effectively a vacuum leak which will throw out the D-Jet FI system (I'm assuming you have a V8). Just eplace the snapped / broken tube it will be pennies. In the mean time if you plug the end nearest the engine it should start running better - door locking might become entertaining though

Good luck

J

Hey,
thanks for that, i fixed the tube and the car is better, it idles better now, but car is still cutting out occasionally. it has been running really well untill now, not sure what else it could be. new oil, new fuel lines, and filters. even cleaned the spark plugs yesterday but it still seems to be struggling.
cheers,
luke

If the car is in a decent state of tune, i.e. ignition system ok - good plugs, HT leads, points etc and the timing and idle is set right it could still be a vacuum leak. These cars are very sensitive to leaks of this nature - check all your rubber hoses in the engine bay, particularly those around the idle air distributer for cracks or small holes. Likewise the line from the manifold to the MAP sensor, the vacuum line to the brake servo and even the line to the tranny modulator, any of these leaking can cause the car to missbehave especially at idle (especially the MAP line). If I remember correctly idle on these is 750 - 850rpm so make suer your getting that when it's warm. I take it by cutting out you mean at idle ?

hey,
yeah i went to take the car for a drive this afternoon and it was fine idleing, though not reving quite enough to make me certain its fine, but as soon as i put it in reverse it cut out, same for drive. I sealed the crack quite well so i dont know if theres still a leak, but before it broke the car was fine so im guessing there must still be a leak somewhere. I cant imagine its ignition or spark lines or anything like that, atleast i hope its not .
cheers,
luke
