Valve Job... now what?

Hey Gang, removed the head on our 68' 250- 114 motor and it turns out it needs a valve job for sure and maybe valve guides replaced.
My questions are--
As long as i have the head off is there anything i could/ should replace or check on the motor? ( pistons look ok, cylinder walls look smooth and shiny )
Also do i only need to replace the head gasket? The valve cover gasket and the intake/exhaust gasket look great. Can't see anything else that's obvious that i should replace.

Thanks in advance,
Burkster

Hello Burkster,

The exhaust valve guides almost always need replaced. Definately replace the headgasket, valve seals, manifold gasket and consider replacing the timing chain if it has never been replaced.

Going much deeper in the engine will go very much deeper in your wallet!

Try the headwork first, it usually solves most of the issues.

Thanks Joe for the advice.... "exhaust valve guides almost always need replaced"
That would explain the large amount of exhaust gases exiting the oil breather vent when i first started the car
By the way, you wouldn't happen to know where i can find a head gasket for this motor would ya ? I'm checking some of the on line sites and can't seem to pull up the part ??

thats 'blow by' caused by worn bores and rings. nothing to worry about unless the exhaust is also blowing blue smoke. Get gasket kits direct from Mercedes, they always have them in stock.
