240D smoking problem
My 76 240D W115 car recently started smoking pretty bad. It does it all the time, but mostly upon acceleration. It is grey smoke. The car also now takes a long time to shut off when I push the start lever in. It has a mechanical shutoff valve, not a vacuum one. The other day, it didn't turn off at all and I had to let out the clutch to stop it. some days it stops just fine. I thought maybe the vacuum pump was bad, but I don't see oil in the line, and the brakes work fine. Is my injector pump going out? I timed it and set the valves about 7k ago. Any help would be appreciated.

I suggest a compression test. It sounds like you are just burning a lot of oil due to bad piston rings or totally worn out valve guides.
The problem with stopping is a big clue here. It can be a lot of things, but if your engine is using a lot of oil then motor oil slipping past your rings or being sucked down through the worn valve guides and cause the engine to keep running. Check your oil frequently. If you notice it buring more than usual then your engine might just be totally worn out. Mercedes recommends a rebuild of these engines every 250,000 miles, although we all know they are capable of much more. Pooka |
