Talking 67' 250S Oil Filter Question

Hello, I have a 250S with the "Canister" type filter that you take the bolt out, and it has an extra gasket on the side that you put inside the can, and bolt it back up to the engine. However, I had just seen a screw on type canister that would make it easier to change oil. Do these screw right onto the old spot? Is there any modifications that have to be done? Has anyone converted to a screw on filter? Just checking before I buy it. Thanks.

Dave

Agree. You still need to reach up and get the filter out without spilling the oil in it. Save your money for a set of Webers.

Dave where did you get that front license plate? Is it period correct?

Did these cars have vinyl and leather seat options? I have vinyl and am wondering if they are replacements.

License plate is from West Germany....Got it on ebay for 15 bucks. I"m not sure if it's period correct or not.
The seats are vinyl. However, the car has been well taken care of, and there are no issues at all with the seats.
I have no clue about the options of that year. The person I bought it from said his father bought the car,(One family car) and made sure he had every option available that year. That's why it has AM/FM Power windows, Power Steer, and AC.

Cool, thanks Dave. In my owner's manual, the original license plate number is written in there. Its an 8 digit numeric number, no letters. I will research a bit for period correctness and maybe get one made with the original number. The family I bought mine from bought the car in 66 from the Stuttgart plant. I have the original bill of sale, deposit receipt, freight liner carbon copies of the shipment. Dispute correspondence between owner, MB, freightliner, because of miner scratch to the fender upon delivery. Also got a type written letter/itenerary from the travel agent at PanAm Airlines outlining the trip. Papers on freight insurance, tourist insurance. Original receipts for the purchase of various manuals too, all in german. Also have a full page ad from the 67 SF Examiner. Also have the original grill bagdes from both the plant and the dealer, which no longer exists. The car had 4 tires from 3 different decades, which all have been replaced by a fresh set of white walls. But the original spare is still in the trunk. Pretty cool.

So starting to restore the wood now, I presume the long peice on the dash near the windshield is glued down. I don't see any screws.

Yes, the wood is original. It is glued? Maybe clipped to the defrostor vents? There is also a curved cut toward the windshield. Looks like it might be for expansion? Not sure but it's rather interesting the detail they went to.

All of your paper work sounds interesting. I have the pink card, and all of the orginal books. The owner sent all of the paper work from repairs he had done to the car over the years, so it's pretty well documented. I am amazed at the originality of this car. That's the main reason I bought it.

It has been a lot of work, but also alot fun getting it going. The other nice thing is you can still get 4 doors cheap, and in nice condition.

I would love to see some pictures of your car sometime when you get a chance.

Hello flacollect,

The original oil filters are easy to find and fairly inexpensive. Be sure you have all the seals. An upper seal is usually missing rendering the filter useless.

Here is a diagram of all the parts and part numbers. Pay special attention to make sure that the upper seal #37 is not missing. (diagram by Alfred Esser of the W113 Pagoda group).

Hi liondancer, I restored the dash wood on my 1966 250S about four years ago. The wood was not glued, but was held on with blind studs that were fasten with nuts on the underside of the metal underplate. If I recall the studs were positioned about a foot apart. While some were a bit difficult to reach, all-in-all, the wood came off with little effort. Good luck on your project.
