W108 Stereo Wiring
Hi,
Recenetly purchased a new stero (CD player) for the 280SE, having trouble with the wiring. The old one was put in by the previous owner, after they threw out (!!!!!!!!!) the Becker because it didnt get the right stations. Something inside me died when I heard that, but oh well. Anyway, the wires dont seem to match up, and now there is either a fuse or something blown because the light doesnt come on for generator in 1st the hazards dont work, and the light for door open doesnt work either. Im thinking something has shorted, but Im no electrician so I'm not sure what. Once this is fixed, has anyone done this new CD in the W108 before? I would really appreciate some advice on the wiring side of things and setup. Cheers in advance, and Happy New Year to all!! Luke

Here is the Becker I didn't need anymore: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p2762.l1259&item=300282770476&viewitem=
It is incredible what they go for.

The W108 gets it's radio power from terminal 30 on the ignition switch . There should still be power wire in the radio hole in the dash. Use a multimeter with the key in position one to find which loose wire has 12 volts. The original radios were earth(-) body which means the actual case of the radio was used as ground to the car. You will need to locate a suitable point or look through the radio hole for bunch of brown wires screwed to the dash frame. that's cars earth connections. you can ground (earth ) to that. The other things, dome light etc are all run from the number 1 fuse. If the fuse hasn't blown, check to see if some clown hasn't pulled the wires from behind the fuse. The fuse block unscrews and drops slightly so you can access the back of it. Very early W108's didn't have an accessory position on the key but still have a power wire for as radio. Because your car had a becker the wire is possibly red with a black tracer. |

Hello,
Many of the W108s had an auxilery fuse box (two fuse box) on the right side near the firewall under the hood. One fuse ran the radio, and the other was for an optional power antenna. The fuses corrode or tarnish and loose connection interupting the power feed to the radio. Twist or clean those fuses!
