My 73 280SEL 4.5 with black leather interior came with it's original sticker. It was priced right around $12000.

If the 280SEL cost around $12,000, how much more was the up-graded 300SEL?

itr depended on the options, german delivery program price was $9952 for a 300SEL before options. Thats in 1970's dollars BTW. Then you had to add options like radio, air, rear light switches, roof, and so on.
East coast USA delivered cars were $12886 and west coast were $13032 .These included dealer costs but did not include delivery and taxes. Again the cost would be higher for added extras .Also, these were the recomended dealer prices ,so not everyone would pay this price.

Thanks, Mercmad 6.3. My assumption was/is that, un like Euro delivered cars, the 300SELs destined for the USA came with virtually all the options Mercedes offered in any given year (leather, AC, sunroof, best Becker radio and the like), with the possible exception of Mercedes' first generation cruise control that I have seen on a couple of these last edition 4.5 cars. Is this not so?

May I ask for the source of your information? Thanks.

The option list is lot longer than that, things like heated rear screen, rear fog lamp,Limited slip diff, larger radiator (One of mine has this ). Automatic antenna OR manual control antenna ( so you can trim antenna height to suit local conditions) leather wasn't the top option,Velour was ( and still is ) .Warning triangle , fire extinguisher, first aid kit, a more comprehensive tool kit with a vinyl bag ,Black or Ivory wheel, larger battery etc etc .

The list of 'standard' options on USA delivered cars were,Aircon, tinted glass, whitewall tires,Becker Europa AM/FM stereo ( short wave adapter was extra) power windows, leather seats ,powersteering and electric sliding roof ($211 ).The last was an Option delete item, you could order your car without it.

I have the original price card from 1973. The 300SEL 4.5 was $14,130. The following optional equipment was standard:

Air Conditioning
Antenna, Automatic
Central Locking
Glass Tinted All Around
Leather Upholstery
Power Steering
Radio-Becker Europa Grand Prix
Tires-White Sidewall
Windows-Electric

The only other option listed is a Roof-Sliding, Electric for $315.

Hope this helps.
