Steering shaft size/Steering wheel fit???

When I got my 1971 300SEL 6.3 back from the shop it was at, it was missing the Nardi steering wheel, that was on it when dropped off.
In it's place was a ,(I believe), a correct year, but wrong,(horn ring is painted/not chrome),well cracked steering wheel.
I have located a 70's 450 SL Nardi wheel,that I would like to buy.
Does anyone know,(for sure), that it will fit?I am asking as far as hub adapter, and shaft size.Thank you!! Mark

And why doesn't the "shop" it was at want to give you back your old Nardi wheel?

Personally, I like the big original Mercedes wheels. My coupe had a Nardi in it, and I couldn't get rid of it fast enough.

Horn ring should be painted, not chrome.

Painted???

Jim- I have seen pictures, that the German guy,(selling on Ebay ),posts, and assumed that the 6.3 wheel would be all chrome.
Mine is a flat silver, with the two little arms , nearest the center being chrome. So this is a correct horn ring?
Thanks, for your expertise.

Hi Maf
I dont know about the 6.3 but the 450sl had a small splined shaft approx 15mm with a nut on the end up to 1975 when they changed over to a 21mm shaft with a nut and then a little later the same shaft with a bolt with an allen key head. if your shaft is 15mm diam then the 450sl hub will probably fit
cheers

Well, my 69 6.3 had a painted one, so does my 71 250C, and every W114/W115 car I've ever owned.....

While not 100% certain, I strongly suspect the ring was changed from chrome at the same time the wiper arms and blade holders went from chrome to a brushed surface. These changes were considered a safety upgrade to minimize sunlight reflection. These changes likely took place in the 66-67 timeframe, when many of the safety rules were implemented. US cars also made the change at the same time.

I don't quite understand your reference to the chrome, the entire ring and both horizontal mounting arms, should be silver. The center hub cover should be vinyl all the way to the outside edge. Earlier wheels, sometimes had a chrome ring around the vinyl hub pad, but not the 6.3 or the W114/W115 cars.

Jim
