72 108 radiator question
I am new to working on cars and have a few questions maybe someone could answer. I pulled my radiator this weekend to repair leaks and notice it is designed to cool transmission fluid with entry and exit points at the bottom of the unit, water with entry and exit points at the top and bottom of the unit and a second radiator on the far left that appears to cool motor oil with entry and exit points at top and bottom. I do not want to mess anything up and need to know if there are any special instructions I should be aware of in regards to the transmission section and the motor oil section. Do I need to do anything when the unit goes back in aside from topping off fluid levels? Also what is the front radiator for with the aux fan? (which I have never heard go on) Does the aux fan help cool the motor as well?

You don't need to do anything special. Have the radiator cleaned at a radiator shop. They'll inspect it and pressure test it.
The oil cleaner can be cleaned by them also. If it isn't leaking you can lie it on it's front with the oil fittings facing up. Fill it with some paint thinner/mineral spirits and let it sit for a day. Drain it, flush it out with more thinner and let it sit on end to dry. Just re-install it when you replace the radiator and you'll be good to go. When you re-fill the cooling system you'll probably have to "burp" it. Undo the heater hose leading to the diverter valve on the firewall, fill the system, let it sit for half an hour, top it off, start the engine and when the coolant is flowing freely from the disconnected hose replace and tighten the hose. Bring the engine to operating temp with the heater controls on "heat", shut off the car, wait for cool down and check the coolant level. The "radiator" in the front is actually the condensor for the A/C. The fan only comes on when either the engine temp reaches 210 F or when the A/C is engaged. |

If your side rubber mounts fell apart like mine you may want to replace them. Fortunately I had a spare set laying around so I didnt need to wait for parts to arrive.
