Those are the emission and carb vac swithes. Chiltons has a good write up. They are color coded (look at the top of the vacuum device for color). Listen for leaks, replace vac lines.

It is a speed related vacuum cut-out for the carb dashpot. It kicks open the throttle when you slow down to ensure the emissions are not raised when the throttle snaps shut. I removed mine, just unbolted and taped over the plug, and I then set up the dashpot to operate like the european cars. Simple to do, look in the Chilton and you can see it. Each carb has a vacuum port. The front carb supplies vacuum to the distributor. Attach a rubber vacuum line on the rear carb directly to the dashpot and then adjust it just like the book says.

In the land of late 60's Zenith INAT carbs, which your car does NOT have, the vac dashpot helps the car to keep from stalling with sudden stops or on offramps if you have an auto tranny. I'm not sure if the emissions friendly zenith-strombergs on your car are succeptible to this, but if you have a problem with stalling or sputtering in those circumstances a little dashpot is a handy thing.
Many people live without them and just bump up the idle speed a little higher. I find that makes the tranny shift a little hard into gear from P myself and for some reason I like a wicked low idle. I think there are also anti-dieseling fuel cutoffs on that car but I'm not sure. Those are totally unnessecary as long as your car isn't running-on after you turn it off in hot weather. I know the lean emissions tuning throws all sorts of monkey wrenches at you.

Just to clarify something...unless someone has changed the carbs, the original carbs on the 1969 230/8 are 35/40 Zenith INAT. there are no idle fuel cut-off solenoids on the 1969 models.

Oh, you're totally right man, it's an m180. I was thinking 230.4! Shoulda noticed the dizzy. So that solenoid on these is somehow tee'd to the dashpot on the linkage? On the older 230's it just goes straight from the carb to the dashpot, no fender mounted anything. In that case, welcome to the exciting world of m180 ownership Jason, they're great little engines.
