1JZ Swap into a 280S

I have been making some numbers, and i believe making a EFI install with megasquirt into my 280S its not a cost effective arrangement, i calculate it may cost me around $1500 to $2000 after all bit and pieces have been installed. Buying a new Solex 4A1 like this one

http://cgi.ebay.de/SOLEX-VERGASER-MB-280-280C-280S-4A1-71782501_W0QQitemZ120246988352QQihZ002QQcategoryZ61254QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

its also NOT cost effective since, it would be $2100 plus shipping an i guess that even with a new solex carburetor you could have problems

However i have found a nice 1JZ Twin turbo engine with 280hp complete with auto trans on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-TOYOTA-SUPRA-SOARER-1JZ-GTTE-AUTOMATIC-ENGINE-SWAP_W0QQitemZ250353391977QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item25035339197 7&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Cost runs for $1000 + $ 650 shipping up to Honduras Port, has anyone tried to do this? It is feasible?

Certaingly i may look heretic trying to put a Toyota engine into my mercedes, and i truly belive that the M110 powerplant has potential and i would love to put the engine working with an EFI setup but i fear to spend $2000 and still have to put with a car that run fine just "somtimes".

As much as i would like to have keep the engine bay clean of insanities, i want to enjoy my car, to me, that kind of joy comes with driving it.

If you want to pop that engine into your MB keep in mind you'd need to buy the turbos too. That engine does not come with them (or at least they are not pictured nor listed in the "Included"). Add $1000 per turbo I'd guess. Probably why the seller abandoned the idea.

Cheaper engine swaps can be done with more power, like a SB chevy...

I just asked them for the turbos, to me it seems they are covered under that heat plate

I say it's your car, go for whatever you feel works best for you.

I'm going to do EFI on mine, I'm guessing it'll probably be more than $2k...then again I like the odd-ball aspect of keeping the M110 in there and modding it to make a bit more HP and more fuel economy.

If you did the conversion and made it look 'right' and professional it'd surely make the rounds on the web as being a cool conversion. But like Tomguy said, a chevy or ford crate motor swap would probably net the best $/hp ratio.

Jam Engineering still sells the Holley replacement for the M110. They range from $685-$985 US depending on what bells and whistles you want.

Shipping can't be more than $100 to Honduras.

Still well below the estimates you have for either fuel injection or the engine swap and it's a straight "drop-in". You use the stock air cleaner. Nobody even knows you don't have the Solex except for the fact your car is running.

There have been posts about Holley and Rochester carb conversions so perform a search. Look at JEGS or SUMMIT for one.

The 1JZ is a good motor, but why not go all out with a 2JZ? With a 2JZ you'll have a ton of after market parts to choose from. Supramania.com is a great site for info on these motors.

It is dare I say, popular over here in thailand. It is very "doable" and turbo or no turbo, it is a great engine!

I have a closer relative to the Merc six banger in mine. I have the L28D with auto which legend had is was from the days when Prince?Dastun?Nissan bought the blueprints from Merc and created the L series Engines. Mine "looks right" but most of all it drives well and makes the car as you (OP) say, enjoyable.

I am using mine every day got it last monday and have done near a thousand miles!

Good on fuel too. similar to my 12R Toyota Corona 1600 (1976) and better than the 2006 Yaris 1500 VVTI these two have replaced!

I was reading an article the other day about old domestic cars with engine swaps born or necessity in Cuba, anything is possible. I don't think it's crazy either, as charming as the Merc motors are they just aren't very efficient, and it's an issue if you drive one of these old cars every day. It'd be a job though, no doubt.

not that much of a job. Nissan L series is an easier swap than 1 j 1g or 2j. 2js are pricey too and not worth it on this type of job. I had one in my GS300 Lexus and loved it, but that was a different car at a different time. the 1j is more than up to the job but a Nissan L series will go in easier.

good luck!

Go on line and check out better prices for those old used Jap engines and do not be fooled by the "one owner, only 3 years old, only 30,000 miles" B/S either. Most japanese engines are idled continuously and can run the equivalent of 300,000 miles in a short time. We have dozens of importers here in OZ . The best way to buy is a complete 1/2 cut. You get everything for the engine including all the aircon electronics etc etc . And $1000 is too much, those engines sell for around $200-300 here. The Nissan RB30 -34 Turbo is the engine to use ,it even looks like a mercedes six.

M110 is no good. It has been turbo'd a time or two before but the valve train falls apart even faster.

1 and 2jz's line up near perfect in the benzo's. Theres probably 10-20 1 or 2jz swapped benzo's out there .

I dont know what a 280s is but here's a 2jz in a 230ce:

Seeing as you do not know what a 280S is.I'll take your comments with a grain of salt. ..have you ever seen a M110 with valve gear broken becuase it was turbo'd? got any pictures to show us? have you pictures of a M110 with a turbo? .or are you just" saying" ?
An M110 is a very strong engine. The valve consists of two cams operating rockers which work the valves and all are pressure fed with main oil pressure.
The whole assembly is encased in a seperate box .
I have seen broken chains and ONE broken sprocket. All caused by owner abuse.I've never seen a M11O yet with a broken "valve gear".
There are plenty of M110's being raced succesfully in various Historic series around the world, the only place I see mercs with off brand engines is on the drag strip or pictures on websites. Nothing with any credibilty.
I have seen M110's with close to 1 million miles on them without ever having had the head or oil pan off. Which is more than i can say about throwaway japanese engines.
