rattle from the steering column ('67 250s)
anyone know what I can do to cure the clattering sound I get from my steering column over some (many) harsh bumps in the road?
Sounds like it is at the top of the column just behind the wheel. what could be knocking together there? Any help appreciated (apprciation show in virtual beers at the Cyber Pub).

Check the steering coupler. If the bushings are worn out it will transmit the sound through the steering shaft.
If you've never had it replaced or have the documentation showing it was replaced then it's probably due. |

remove the steering wheel, then the horn ring button, there, you can see the bearing and check play bet. the shaft and bearing. If your car have column shift, check if there's 2 small bushings, about 1/2" diameter. they're placed back to back in the aluminum housing, to remove housing, unscrew 2 screws for the combi. switch and just set aside the switch.

AH!!!!!
What if I had columm shift but, it has been converted to a floor shifter. WOULD REMOVING the column shifter create this clanking sound? and given that I don't have the shifter, any ideas on how I can solve this riddle? is it as simple as: find out how big the gap is and have a washer/bareing made or found to fit?

Is the clattering sound only there when you hit a bump or does it happen at speeds?
Do you feel any vibrations or shaking in the wheel when it happens? |

from column to floor right? did you remove the long shifting rod in the steering column? you won't need that there, unless you'll put it back.

Yes the SHifting rod from the column is gone. (I didn't do this conversion, I aquired it like this)
The clattering is ONLY over bumps not at speed. Just when bounced of sharp bumps in the road. I can feel some vibes in the wheel but it is hard to tell how much because it is so jarring, hitting the bumps.

check the 2 small bushings in the steering coupling, it should be there, check also the mounting of steering box, replace the 3 bolts w/ stainless steel, use 17mm socket and coat the threads with anti-seize compound.

yeah I forgot the washer, but using stainless steel bolts will give you a piece of mind since it will not rust, stronger even will last.
