Engineering Guide to 450SL (78'); how it "works"

Hi,

I'm looking for detailed documentation on how the 450SL works. I've had a 78 450 for about 4 years and have repaired and maintained it myself.

Couple months back, it wouldn't stay started in the cold (Chicago). Usually if it doesn't start (not often), I just pop the hood and take off the air intake assembely. But this time that didn't work.

So I sprayed some starter fluid in the air manifold and it would start for just 2 or 3 secs then I would have to press the gas to about 4000 rpm to keep it running at all. If I let the rpm drop below 3500, the car dies.

At first I thought it be a frozen gas line from the cold, but the same thing happened to me 2 years ago, and I think it was warm out then. I thought I fixed the problem with a new fuse for my fuel pump (fuel goes directly to my battery, I think its for the fuel pump as I can't find a relay for my fuel pump); but this time the fuse was good.

So, if I can find out how the car starts mechanically: is.e. the starter turns, the fuel pump turn on, the cold start value is activated, the warm-up regulator is activated, fuel is sent to the distributor...something like this, I can diagnose the problem better.

Any suggestions on an high-level "Engineering Guide to the 450SL"?

Thank Much

P.S. I have the '450SL W107 WORKSHOP LIBRARY CD' and several repair manuals, but what I'm looking for is more detailed information on the process the car parts go through when starting; something that is more detailed and not found in these manuals.

Yes, that and the silver/grey phamplets on CIS that mercedes published. There's a CIS theory book and three books for each of the major CIS versions (starting 77, systems with Lambda, the early M102 system)

These appear on ebay and can set you back about 20$.
