W114 rear suspension questions
Can anyone tell me more about the rear end & rear suspension - from the 70s and what possible can be swapped in. I am still reading through the various threads related to this subject but so far have not found exactly what I am looking for.
Any information is greatly appreciated!! Thank you! |

IRS, diagonal trailing arm, coil spring, subframe mounted to body forward of each wheel and off the diff rear housing.
W115, W114, W123, W126 (85 and earlier), and R107 (85 and earlier) use basically similar parts. Late w126 and R107 use a different subframe. 500SE/L and 560SE/L use cast light alloy trailing arms, others use stamped steel. V-8 engined cars had larger differential housings. What else fits? All depends on your fab skills, I guess. Jim

I knew about the IRS, was not clear on the rest.
Thanks for clearing that up. If you where going to prep a W114 for a line cone time at the track... any recommendations? I don't want a low rider that is not my intention, but I am curious about springs, spring rates, shocks, sway bars, etc and any advantages to bringing the car a little lower, stiffer springs, etc. I know a few tricks to getting better traction with an IRS setup, but I am not sure about the rest, especially the front. Any suggestions or help is appreciated. I can't say I want a full on race inspired suspension, but - are their models with readily available suspension parts that would be could sources? I don't know jack about Mercedes Suspension and about the same with regard to AMG and similar tuned early cars for racing and the like. Trying to improve what I can on a budget. |

You might try flogging it around the track without mods first. You might be surprised at how well it works in stock form.
Check out this site for one man's take on a finny racer, and yes, I do know it's not a 114 http://www.myfinnyracer.co.za/ Michael

I have read through that site before, very cool, I do love the look of the fin tail cars. Their is a 66 for sale in a yard not far from here for 500.00 and it runs, but it was not what I wanted.
Yea I plan on taking it to the next event I can to get some track time on it, soon as I comfortable in her running condition. I am just considering options and trying to find as much information as I can. |

What to review/replace? The rubber bits.
Take a good look at the car while it's on a lift. Count the number of bushes and things made of rubber and take a guess as to which of them are more than 10 years old. Then start replacing them. -CTH |

I'm interested to hear this as well.
I'd love for my W114 to look stock-ish and handle well. All I have in mind are some bilstein HD shocks (basically sport shocks with longer travel) and replacing the rubber bushings etc. Does anyone have a good source for all the bushings for front and rear? On another note, is there any type of LSD for the rear diff on these cars? It'd be nice to have more traction if I did end up taking it to a track day or something.
