I couldn't help but laugh (W108 SEL 4.5)

So... I'm hoping some of you have seen the movie Little Miss Sunshine.

This morning began with me driving my Daily Driver 280sel to school like I have every morning for the past 2 years.

Shortly after I get on the road, I'm making a left turn and the horn honks twice! Of course the drivers around me shoot me a look, and I didn't know what else to do but wave and be friendly!

I thought that was weird and maybe I had mistakenly pushed the horn around the turn, but on the next left turn, the same thing! and more waving to strangers!

My horn just loves left turns it seems! I've removed the #2 fuse in the fuse box which gets the power to the horn. Unfortunately it also gives power to the windshield wipers which are definitely a must have in this season. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I found myself laughing hysterically and waving constantly as I rounded the bends.

The horn only goes off when I turn the wheel to the left about a 1/4 turn. If you turn beyond that or even before that, there is no horn. Turning the wheel while the car was parked and idling surprisingly did not have the same effect, and there was no unexpected honkings.

Any help would be appreciated! I would also appreciate if anyone reading this would honk their horn this week and wave to someone, it really puts a smile on your face.

remove the steering wheel and put a small 3mm washer"spacer" on the hub and then re install the the steering wheel. I assume you have a colum shifter. Its hard to explain without showing you but behind the steering wheel the column stifter mechanism is touching the steering wheel which grounds the horn. putting a washer will push the steering wheel out alittle bit so the small metal thing can't reach the back of the steering wheel to make the horn blow.

If you wanted to anal about it you could pull the entire column out of the car and replace the small bushing in the shifter column mechanism.

Sounds like fun
Maybe one of the wires to the horn came loose inside the steering wheel, thus grounding when you turn left?

I'd pry the center padding off, loosen the 5 nuts and take the steering wheel gently off to see it the wires still were in place, and that the wire insulation is not damaged anywhere. See picture, it looks like that inside. Worth a try!

Hey Mercy, am I putting washers on the 5 posts that connect the steering wheel, or taking the larger nut in the center off further back inside the column? I put washers on the 5 posts and it did nothing. It might rain tonight so I can't take out the mercedes...

The proper fix is to dissassemble the upper oolumn, and replace the plastic upper shifter-shaft bushings. Alternately, shimming the steering wheel might be OK if the shaft has a straight spline. If the shaft has a tapered spline, I wouldn't recommend shimming it.

Great

Can you tell me where I can buy these bushings, or will I have to pay top dollar and get them at the dealership? Thanks Mark

What do you consider top dollar?
They're two small semi-soft plastic rings. I can't imagine the pair would be more than about $20, even from a dealer, but you should call and ask Phil here at PartsShop.
Or, if the price for OE bushings turns out to be just too much, you could get creative and cut your own bushings from some rubber fuel hose, as I've done in the past.
Not to save money, but because it wasn't convenient at the time to hunt for the OE parts or wait for a special-order.
I had good luck using regular fuel-hose, but today I'd suggest using the type of hose rated for fuel injection, which is tougher than regular fuel-hose.
Meanwhile, you could disconnect and tape-up the wiring at the horns, so you can reinstall the fuse and at least have wipers again.

Happy Motoring, Mark
