220D oil bath filter...replacements?

When I got my 220D, the housing and cover of the oil bath filter were there, and the tub was half full of oil, but nothing else was in it. I called around and just asked for a new filter element, and got quoted $140 for it. What's the missing piece here, and surely it doesn't cost that much?

Thanks!

It's just a foil mesh affair and yeah, to replace it would be about $140.

It's easy to convert to a paper cartridge canister type. It just takes a little bit of finagling to fit a Baldwin PA 2805 canister in the same place of the oil bath.

It's been awhile since I opened the filter. And after thinking about it for awhile it's a can with a mesh top and holes in the side. It is also stuffed with loose steel wool that traps the particles.

How much oil should actually be in the bath?

If you decide to renew the filtering mesh then use the coarsest steel wool you can find. Use a fine grade mesh as the final "gate". Steel wool bits and engines are not a good mix.

If I remember correctly, there are either small "bumps" or a line on the actual oil bath area. If not, then fill the lower part to the first graduation level.

you remember correctly, there's an indented line to fill the oil level up to.

There is an arrow mark, about an inch from the bottom.

The recommendation is 30 weight but it doesn't matter. Whatever oil you are using for the engine is fine. It is just a trap for heavier than air particles.

fix it like the factory set it up- If you look harder you will find one for less, as it could be used. This set up allows for max. air flow and good air cleaning , too. It has better flow and protction than the K and N filters do.
