79 300sd Reverse Band Adjustment
I know that once upon a time I ran across some great directions for my "slipping" reverse. Can not for the life of me find it now.
Does anyone have the link for the archives? |

I rarely venture outside the vintage forum so I had to take a look. I found this in the DIY links and resources section which is much farther down than I usually scroll.

Adjust it gently and gradually. Don't do it like I did. I cranked it in until I felt about 10 ftlbs resistance. Jumped into the beast threw it into reverse and away it went. Aha!, sez I, slipped it into drive and went for a short spin. Short indeed! When the tranny shifted into final drive it slipped into reverse at the same time!
Took a week for the swelling in my lips to go down. Those steering wheels are hard! Backed the adjuster off about a turn and a half and it's all better! |

I'm leery of auto trannies so I had my buddy who runs an Merz. Indie shop , adjust it for me on SWMBO's '82 240D ~ he held the bolt whilst he loosened the locknut , then he turned the bolt in by hand until he reached apx. 10 # then he backed the bolt off by 1/2 turn .
It's been shifting fine ever since and that was two years ago if not longer , this on a daily commuter and we take it on long road trips a few times a year too... I really need to have him rebuild it is it drips a fair bit and uses a pint of ATF per 200 miles when on long , boring desert trips when I don't slow down for hours at a time .
