What's up with the little nets inboard of the headlamps? Some kinda euro-bug screen?

"Euro" no... I have only ever seen them on Aussie and some S.Africa cars. I think it's supposed to be a rock guard of sorts.

It's amazing how much damage a pimp can do.

I've also seen these on Australian cars. Never in Europe. I guess it is to prevent stones to damage the front part of the fenders and ending up in the engine compartment while following or crossing vehicles on dust roads, especially on W111s and 108s where there is a space between the fender and the bonnet to help vent the engine compartment.
