M110 pcv/oil drainback/ ?

What is the deal with that little short (rock hard) hose on the drives side of the head that looks really really annoying to have to replace. I assume it's pulling crankcase vapors into the intake, and it's also managed to leave oil and crud on my intake pretty regular. Can one cheat a regular fuel/oil rated piece of hose in there? I really should have done this when my intake was off I suppose.

Is there a pcv system to clean on this motor?

If you're talking about the breather hose, it's only $16 new, so don't do it half-assed : http://www.europartsdirect.com/epc-items.asp

If you're talking about the long hose from the rear of the head to the pan, this is hard plastic, not rubber as is the breather, and is the oil return line.

Naa, not the bigger S hose. It's the one from the nipple on teh intake midway of the motor beside the carb going up to a nibble on the upper cam housing. It's an oil vapor drainback I assume.

that hard oil return is a PITA to replace. I would the OEM parts.

Does the hose leak?

I am yet to even see that hardline on my car, the guy had a thread about replacing it here not long ago I remember. I have some random old car weeping but nothing drips on mine anywhere, so I guess it's alright. The one I'm talking about is just ahead and beside the carb, comes North up out of the intake on to the cam housing. It's old and hard and weeping.
It looks like I can cut it out and replace it with a rubber hose and possibly some hose clamps, just in case. It makes a little mess where it's weeping at.

I don't believe your motor uses a PVC (my '77 M110 doesn't either), so that hose, unless there is another, has to be the breather hose. It's obviously different on the carbed M110.

I have a pic from the intake gasket job somewhere. There is the largeish S hose to the breather from the valve cover, but this one is the size of half of one's little finger.

That thing..

I think it's a drain back out of the valve cover, either splashed oil and/or oil vapor condenses inside some sort of baffeling in the valve cover and drains back there.

Yeah, that's different from the later M110. If you don't the long plastic hose from the back of the head to the pan, then this hose must be your return line. But from the photo, it appears to connect to the head. Maybe the bottom of that fitting has another hose under it. Check to see if it goes down to the pan.

Goes into the intake, intake path goes into block.

IIRC, you can pull the valve cover and and then unscrew the vent upward out of the cam housing. 10mm deep socket. This gives you enough clearance to replace that short hose.

That would be excellent.

There is also a modified vent which has a short pipe which sticks up further into the valve cover recess. I think the idea is that it keeps less liquid oil from draining into the intake.

That sounds like a good idea. There isn't any excess blowby to force oil out on mine, I'm pretty sure it's just the hard old piece of hose doing the weeping.

This is an old thread that I am resurrecting as I'm having this problem with my 80 280TE. There does not seem to be excessive blow by and I'm getting good vacuum, but still loosing oil through the air filter housing. I almost would expect to see a mesh filter or something that will allow vapors to vent but prevent oil from exiting.

Any thoughts here?
