Question on posting a picture

Hey all,

Now that I finally have a digital camera, I tried to post a pic of one of my cars up here but it's too big (bytes). How do I lower it?

Please excuse my ignorance. I'm computer illiterate.

Aaron,
You have to open the photo file in an application that allows you edit images. Adobe Photoshop is one, there are many others. The procedure is to change the image size and/or resolution to make the approiate size file. You need to end up with a JPEG file at 72 DPI resolution. If you could tell me what image editing software you have, I could probably help further.

Aaron,

You will need to use some sort of picture editor, such as MicroSoft photo editor or PaintShop to shrink the overall size. Generally I reduce the size of my pictures by 50%, which gives a nice size. I also view them through my web space before posting to ensure the size is about right.

Don't know what operating system your computer is, but chances are if you're running Win95 or higher you have a basic version of MS Photo Editor. Open the picture you want to adjust from your hard drive, select image, resize and decrease by 50%. Save the new version of the picture (rename it if you want to keep the full size shot), then upload the new picture to your web space.

The picture link should look like:

[ img]http://www.aarons_isp.com/aaron/aaron.jpg[/img ]
translation: www. what ever company you use/ then your personal web space/ followed by the file you want to post

only without the spaces before img and after /img .

Hope this helps.

I was able to resize the photo to 50KB, but it's really small. How do I get it so that it will post larger? Also, when I did that, it didn't or wouldn't save it as a jpg file. I have Adobe Photo Shop and Arc Soft. I run Win98.

I'm sorry I don't know anything about Adobe Photo shop. I would think if you took your "raw" picture and just cut the size by 50% and saved it, it would be OK. Might be you'll have to play with the sizes until you find the optimal size for your software.

What type of file does it save as if it won't save as a JPG?

Aaron-
First let me say that I feel your pain in being new at dealing with digital images. There is a learning curve to be dealt with but don't get discouraged!
Here are a few examples to help you size your images:
4" x 6" image @ 72 DPI will be approx 365K photoshop file
4.75" x 7" image @ 72 DPI will be approx 500K photoshop file

Mike makes a good suggestion to experiment with different sizes - why? Because your camera most likely shoots a different file size than his, and most cameras allow you to choose between three or four file capture sizes. Large capture size = best quality but yields fewer pictures per available memory. Small capture size = lower quality but yields more pictures per available memory. Mike's 50% reduction of his original images works for him but we don't know what original file size he started with!

Please let me know what version Adobe Photoshop software you have (Photoshop LE, Photo Deluxe, Full Version Photoshop, etc.) so that I can help you troubleshoot! Sometimes in these situations it's much easier to talk by phone and walk you through the process when you're actually in front of the computer. If you're interested, I can email you my phone#. Hope this helps!
