Interior lighting in '72 280se 4.5
All of my exterior lights work but as far as I can tell only two interior lights are working. The one on the knob for the rear defrost and the one near the floor by the pedals. I Know next to nothing about how a cars electronics work so please explain in simple terms.

start with fuses and ground connections. The electronics on this car are not difficult when it comes to the lights. Did they all of a sudden stop working or did you get the car like this?
The fuse panel should be under the driver side dash, about where your left knee would be.

Also try rotating the dash light rheostat back and forth a number of times. It's the left knob in the instrument cluster.

Thanks for the info I will check the fuses. I bought the car with the lights working as they are. I had no idea they didn't work as I bought the car on a sunny afternoon and it never occurred to me to check the interior lights.
