Help required regarding engine number

Hello, been a long time.

Story is, I put a new motor in my diesel camper, a 306D from 1975, the motor came out of a boat, and is incidently painted green. It's either a 200 or a 220, very similar to what goes in the older Mercedes 114/115 types.

I need a new head gasket, so I took the number from the bottom of the engine into the Mercedes dealer, that number being...

R 115 14 014 02
6

I was informed that I needed a 14 figure number, and that that was located just behind the injection pump.

I found a plate there with the following...

Teil Nmr: 6150109502 80
m: 615940 Agg: 722806

Which is unfortunately not a 14 figure number, thanks in advance for any enlightenment.

The 114/115 number will do you no good. That refers to the W114/W115 BODY style and not the engine.

The 615 is the number you want as that refers to the M615 ENGINE. That is the diesel engine used in the W114's/W115's until late '76 or so.

You probably got the 114 number from the oil pan or some other bracket/part which is configured for those models only.

I'd suggest using the boys over at Fastlane (and now for ANOTHER shameless plug for our sponsers!) except I see you are in the Netherlands.

The block I thought, which I assumed would share the same gasket as the head.

.... my word I haven't been here for a while there was a Merc I scrapped four years ago in my sig. ( *heads off to update* )

Sounds like that 115 number may be for the right engine mount (hence the "R" and the fact it was by the block)...

The engine itself sounds like it came from the following:
(1982) Mercedes-Benz 200 D W 123.120
It seems to be gray-market in the US... you may need to keep looking for the engine number. There are 2 possible gasket pn's:
6150161520
6150162020
I dont know if they are interchangeable, you may need to ask your MB dealership if they are; it may just be an updated part number...

I think I may have a result, I went to a parts store, told the chap that it was a motor out of a boat and he rang a colleague who was able to identify the motor from the "m 615940" on the identification plate and provide the gasket set number.

No idea if it's genuine Mercedes or aftermarket part, not that I care, will post again with the part number, if it happens to be the right gasket.

you can at the left side of the block the no. behind the IP, you will find the flat suface part of the block and aluminum tag( if there is) and above that tag, there's a stamped no. that's the correct engine no. e.g. 615.940-10-******. that's 14 digits in all. You mentioned 615.940 that thing came from 220D from W123 sedan, Can you supply the rest of the no.? first 6 digits can't tell enough especially when ordering parts

On further inspection there is at least a "615" stamped into the block above the plate, thanks for that tip Takernz_30. The rest will be easier to read once the head is off, can't see much at the moment due to the engine having been painted. Wonder why boat owner do that.

as all other marine engines, the reason is to prevent rust, salty environment speeds up the rusting. Scrape the paint to reveal the no.
