1965 220Sb Auto Trans Overhaul
I've begun to take my AT apart, based on a thread over at M-100.cc 6.3 forum. Here's a link:
http://www.m-100.cc/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4432 and I've found the first planetary set, clutch K1, is worn out and I need new ones. Phil is on the hunt. The band looks OK but I'll get a new one anyway. One of the circlips was broken too. It will need all new seals too. The front cover gasket was installed incorrectly and the pan had sealant instead of a gasket. Who knows just what the rest has to offer. I'll post pics soon.

Warren,
I admire your desire to understand motors and (now) transmissions to a depth unparalleled. If I can be of assistance just ask. |

Love it! If you are rebuilding the clutch drums as well (at least new seals) check to see if your tranny has hidden seals that need a refresh too. On the 722.3xx they have some orings that are buried up against the back wall that get hard and leak- not sure about your oldie.
Those frictions don't look all that bad to me. I took some out of a parts transmission that looked almost like the steels. Rick ps hey- I would like to see more of the car...!

Does this mean the Finny's engine overhaul has been completed? Mike still misses that car!
Happy Motoring, Mark

I don't know why, the engine had a knock and the trans was shot.
Latest news, I removed all the guts from the trans and there are more worn clutches. One side was good, the other had no friction material left. I ordered the seal kit and 9 new clutches. The bands are fine which is good because they are super expensive, according to Phil. I have one more clutch pack to open and I'll get working on the seal replacement. I've bagged and tagged all the parts so far and there are lots of them.

I had considered buying that car myself, to transplant the engine/manual tranny from my rusty '60 220Sb, but the significant detail differences between a '60 and '65 Finny might have simply resulted in a long-term unfinised project. Meanwhile, I was unable to follow all of your Finny engine thread, as some of the pages wouldn't load. So I am curious about how your engine turned out. Happy Motoring, Mark
