Help needed in identifying an MB manual 4 gearbox
Hi all,
I got an MB manual 4 trans that came with a V8 bell-housing and flywheel that match the M116 3.5 engine. The part number cast into the right side of the trans housing is 309 261 0101 and is the only part number on the trans case, except for a large painted 116 in red. The machined pad below the shifter cover is blank. The main case is in a light green primer color. Other numbers are front cover: 117 261 0918, rear cover: 115 261 2620, shifter cover: 309 261 0019. I need to replace seals, gaskets, bearings and shifter bushings but could not find the gearbox in EPC. Tom Hanson of the MB Classic Centre is also having difficulties to identify this gearbox. Any help greatly appreciated! Below are some pictures: Last edited by GGR; 05-05-2009 at 11:58 PM. |

Thanks. That's also what I thought. But when I go on EPC I'm getting 1172604201 as the part number for the gearbox equiping the W116.028/029 cars, not 3092600101. Are they the same? If I order seals, gaskets, bearings etc. for the 1172604201 will they fit my gearbox?

Nice 'box! these 'boxes are rare. the rear seal and gaskets I think they're the same as W115 manual 'boxes. where did you get these?

I noticed that 'box last month in ebay.de, I read little german engine parts b/c I worked in a mercedes parts store with my dad when I was in college during break time and when my dad got sick, my dad's boss trained me and my elder brother to supervise in the parts department and my elder brother on sales, after sales and annual inventory.
that's why I read german engine parts like "motoraufangung","getriebe",vergasser","motorhaube","schaltgetriebe",etc... |

What you gonna put it in?

Ach So! I also read a bit of German, but not enough to understand vehicle parts. I got that box in the US. I'm going to mate it with the early M117 5.0 litres found on the 450 SLC 5.0, and the whole thing is going to go in my '62 W111 Coupe with a 3.27 rear end out of W108 4.5.

I have one of those boxes as a spare (also 116) and I could not see a difference between the original 111 3.5 and the 116 transmission from the outside. Everything looked the same, but it did have different casting numbers. Note that part numbers may have changed due to different castings or suppliers. What is on the casting can be very different than what is in the parts number system. Do you think this thing can handle the power from a 5.0 liter engine? I guess you will find out Bert

>> The weak link in that power train will be the spyder pin in the 3:27.... Common to see them oval the casing pin hole out , even with the 4.5 torque.

Unfortunately I do not have any serial number stamped on that trans. The machined pad is blank. I agree seals, gaskets and bearings may be the same.
I am not too worried by the 20% additional power of the 5.0 engine versus the 3.5 one, but more by the 30% additional torque. Experience will tell. Re the rear axle, it's another weak point. But after all, the 6.3 is passing 51 kg of torque, or 75% more compared to the 3.5. I'm going to keep the 195/75/14 tires, they will act as "fuses" to save clutch, transmission and rear axle, while ensuring a funnier drive... My '62 W111 is quite light, as it has no power windows or sunroof, and I'm going to take the AC out. After the transplant the car will be light enough (alloy engine block, power steering pump, radiator, oil cooler, rims, later style smaller/lighter brake booster) to have a better weight/power ratio than the 6.3. If someone knows of alloy brake calipers that are a direct fit on my current 3.5 brakes, let me know. |
