She's wants to start

After working on her for a couple of weeks (1962 190c), oil changed, w/ filter, new spark plugs, new battery... etc. And after sitting 6 months in a shelter in -40C weather.... Its time to start her up. Got the car to turn over relatively easily, she puttts, and puttts, but shuts off. This is my first old car, and I know NOTHING about carbs and tuning, but willing to learn. Can i get some pointers to get the car atleast running cause it really needs it, and yes it ran before i stored her just perfectly.

Are you closing the choke to start? I believe you need to pull out on the knob to the right of the steering column to apply it. Then push it back in gradually as the engine warms up.

Your carburetor is probably all gummed up with residue from the gas that used to be in there. You'll want to dribble a little gasoline down the carb throat or use a little bit of ether to get things going. Repeat this a few times - hopefully your carb bowl will fill up and dissolve enough of the gum to clear the jets. If the condition doesn't clear - you'll have to split the carb and at least give it a quick cleaning with some spray carb & choke cleaner.

Before you open the carb/carbs, run a line from the intake side of your fuel pump, drop the other end into a can of lacquer thinner, crank the car until fuel reaches the carbs and fills them. Let it sit for 20 minutes, connect the fuel line back to the tank and try cranking.

The lacquer thinner will clean up the old varnish without affecting the gaskets and rubber components. It'll spit, sputter and blow some smoke but it should clean right up.

OKay so I poured some fuel in the carb, the idle is very wonky. I can only start the car when i push the idle out like 1/2 or a 1/4 of the way; if i pull it out all the way it won't go. The spark plugs are like black, so I'm guessing its running way to rich!! I have a single solex carb on the car. What can i do next?

I had a 62 190c. The original carb has a funky disc setup for the choke. If you can find a similar carb with a butterfly choke setup I would mount that and take the one with the rotating disc and throw it as far as you can over the hill.

Mine went south about 1975 and I converted it with a carb off a 220b. The bolt pattern was a little different but I made an adaptor and mounted it slightly twisted and it worked fine until I sold it off.

Look down the center of the carb, when the engine is running at 1/4 throttle (or at idle) See if gas is dribbling in from a blown seal of the carb....

The lacquer thinner may cause a smalol explosion too. Don't do it.

What kind of solex carb do you need> I probably have 50 of different kinds. Check out all the numbers and markings and PM me

black plugs mean rich mixture, especially if they were all that way. sounds like a carb rebuild may be in order or perhaps a switch out with another.
Have you checked timing and dwell?

Not meaning to start an argument but how do you figure that lacquer thinner (with a higher flash point than gasoline) could create an explosion?
