Improving M110 Performance
I doubt there is much you can do to a M110, but I thought i'd ask anyways. What kind of things will give me more low end power(1500-3000 RPM). In that RPM range the engine seems dead, but once it gets up above 3500 it can really move. Thanks

For one thing, you can drive it as if it were a stick. Occasionally, I use first gear and manually shift up. Obviously you don't stay in first very long at all, but it makes a BIG difference off the line or starting up hills. Even when I don't off in first, I manually shift. And to save the tranny, I go into neutural when the wait is a long one.

Absolutely not. MBZ builds them with the manual option in mind. In fact, if you read your ops manual, it will tell you to shift into N at long stops to save the transmission. And manually shifting while driving just does what the tranny does anyway - simply at different load & vacuum values.

its gonna reduce the life if you use it improperly. if it breaks manual shifting i would assume that tranny was on it way out and being babied. only way is to put euro internals in, a clutch, or a m103 turbo swap.
in a sense it will reduce the life but, but not its life expectancy, if MB knows the trans will last 250k when its operated correctly and has been serviced, and a tranny that was babied, never driven hard, can last 400k, yes that would be reducing the life.

Good info to have, my trany needs a rebuild before I build up my 280CE motor (supposedly a euro spec, to put in my 280C). Once I find a person that'll do a rebuild on the motor and trany, I'll be in business.
Would changing out the rear end gearing help with lower-end performance as well?

a new rear end gear is too much money for the gain, and your losing a chunk of top speed. im not sure theres a stock gear from another car close enough to the 3.58 either.

If you had someone that could change the 1st gear set IN THE TRANNY, that's what you'd be looking for...more torque in the low gear, then the usual gears after that...leaving the rear alone...
Otherwise, doing the manual shifting will only wear out the linkage sooner than later...if you put it in "D" and go, letting the tranny run by itself, you've moved the shifter once, than ran it, then moved the shifter the second time to park it. But, if you want to be quick off the line, then your're moving the shifter all the time, watching the tac to be sure you don't over-rev each gear and you're putting the additional wear on the linkage points... If you have the replacement pieces and the time to play with it...then that's your baby to do with what you want... Me? I'm trying to get it back in car-show (locals) shape...get some "Oooohs" and "Ahhhhs" from the locals...I'll keep the tranny as healthy as I can 'cause the wallet sometimes likes catching a cold...I don't want my "baby" caught with its pant down...or in this case, its tranny dragging...

you cant change one gear ratio in an automatic, all planetary gears would have to be redone to get the other gears as close to stock again.
