Bilstein yellow... paint?

Figured I'd ask you guys in the vintage group, if I need I'll move the thread (not sure if they used their normal yellow on the old shocks, or if that's a newer thing)...

I picked up a nice coilover suspension for my car (not my 108)... it's bilstein shocks. The shocks have a small amount of rust scale I'd like to clean up and re-paint. Does anyone sell Bilstein yellow?

I bet your local automotive paint store can mix to match. They might even have the formula on hand.

Ask yourself (and I'm only thinking logically): if I spend $18 for a can of paint, time to remove, prep, paint, and re-install, is anyone going to walk by and comment "hey! nice shocks!"?

It isn't about appearance - they look OK enough as is. It's wanting them to last forever, and they have some scaled rust. I've seen scaled rust like this cause full-blown holes in no time with the salt (and worse yet, the pre-storm brine they spray) on our roads!

- Our PennDOT sprays a liquid salt / calcium chloride mix on the roads. I don't know why. Ever since they started, they plow less, and the horrible mixture of both of these consequences causes the bottom layer of whatever goes on the roads to be a super-slick slush, or a thick sheet of ice, as the concentration of this garbage only melts the first 1" of snowfall.

They're just doing their part to help out the U.S. auto industry. Can't sell any new cars if they last forever. What are you? Some kinda commie or something?

Hi Tom
was rebuilding the control arms on one of my other cars and repainted the coil overs. the yellow is very much like the bilstein yellow. I used it because its Hammerite paint signal yellow (hammerite is the same as rustoleum). very good rust protection and brushes on smooth
cheers

It's a comment I might make.

Hey barri, thanks - so it's a close enough match or should I cover the label when I do the whole thing so it all matches perfectly? Rust stop is exactly what I want!

I'm guessing that's a custom suspension on an XJ?

Hi Tom
I dont want to lie to you its really close but probably not exact. I should think it would be close enough to match the label though.

not the XJ, when I was restoring my 67 lotus my wife stupidly bought me a complete set of the original collin chapman blueprints for the original lotus. I decided a couple of years ago to build and exact duplicate (not a kit car). its pretty much finished now but when I took her out on the road for the first time I had a lot of bump steer so I had to redesign the control arms to get rid of it (stupidly if I had read the collin chapman book I would have seen he comments that was the only problem with the original model!). Its powered by a modified 180 HP triumph engine and weighs under 1000lbs so Im just under 4lbs to the HP

I dont have a recent picture with the interior done but this was it last August, I will put up a web site to the build and if anyone is interested I will put the web site in my signature (like all things there is never enough time)

cheers

Very cool! I had an idea that it looked like a seven. Do you consider it a six or seven?

I have wanted a six or seven since I saw them in popular mechanics when I was a pre teen. My dad liked them too and wanted to get the kit and build one...too bad he had eight kids though since it soaked up all the money he had and more!

Yes, please post your blog or whatever you call it.

I have tried for some time to get a set of blueprints for a 6 but they are impossible to come by. This one is based on an early 60's (61) seven. Truly an amazing bit of engineering, one of the first space frames. The entire frame on this with the rear swing arm gussets is just over 70lbs. the 6 has it beat though the entire frame is just over 40lbs. I also have the blue print copies for the lotus 11 but the bodywork is a lot more complicated to make by hand.
Like your dad I have been fascinated by them for years and then by pure chance got the 67 followed by the plans for the 61 and I have promised my self that it will be running on the road before I hit 55. Its finally registered but I am running out of time on my deadline! I should have it running complete by next year but for now its legal on WA roads even though I have not completed the wheel arches on the rear and the cycle guards on the front wheels.

when I start the web page i will send you the link.
cheers
