Transistorized ignition: do I need to change the condenser?

Hi all,

in the series of things I'm doing to sevice my car, I went to the local MB dealer to order new breaker points, condenser and plugs. The guy there who is very helpful and old enough to remember these cars tells me I do not need to change the condenser (which is inside the ignition body) on my transistorized ignition system as it it there merely to serve as an anti-noise. I'm a bit surprised as untill now I've always replaced the condensers at the same time with the breaker points. Any clue?

Thanks!

Inspect the green wire carefully for damage. Replace it if it's hurt. Otherwise, it should be OK to leave alone.

Condensors do get old with age, heat and abuse, but in this case, it only exists to reduce radio noise and not to have an impact on the ignition characteristics. The transitorized unit does the work shaping the pulse instead.

Check the green wire leading to the ignition box. If it's cracked or frayed or bare anywhere, replace the condenser. Clip the wire leading to the condenser itself. Toss the condenser. My 4.5 has never run with one and I strongly suggest yours doesn't either unless you listen to AM radio.
